I would buy the used unit if I could verify it was working properly with a 12" auger or larger. If it is a guess then go with new and warranty.

Neither will have an auger with them, the used one would be coming from a Deere dealer so I'm assuming they'd stand behind it. For the difference in price I'm leaning towards the new unit as I already bought the qc mount from deere so I really don't need the skid steer mount the used unit would come with.

Why can't you drive to them. That's usually always cheaper for me but my house currently isn't set up for semis. I would tale to them and see if they would get rid of the ssqa mount, and after the first incident I would type a contract stating it was fully inspected and that they will carry a %100 Warranty if fixing or return for cash if any malfunctions until XXX amount of day/months/or even year.

If they couldn't do at least a contract that YOU make (so there is no tricky wording to avoid problems) then I would walk away.

Contracts don't have to be fancy. They just need to say for your instance what the agreement is, both buyer and seller (include company, address, contact, sales man, and Manger and/owner) and signatures from anybody involved in the deal

I live in CT, the used unit is in Iowa. So I'm obviously out of driving range.
Additionally on the used unit I'd be paying through my bank card so the risk to me is very little.
As opposed to the cash deal on this one. Which is full of risk, but I absolutely leaned a valuable lesson on this one.
I'm not sure seeing the seller run it on skid steer he had there would have reveled the issue either as the crank case is filled with gear lube not under pressure so disassemble is really the only way other than say a boroscope.

In that case I would go new, take care of it and it should last you a long time. If it is for your business buy new and write it off, won't cost you that much more.

The seller probably purchased it at an auction to re-sell for profit, it probably ended back up at auction and will be someone else's misfortune. Hard to tell with stuff like this...

Glad he was willing to take it back and help you out!

Finally and update to this thread. I was keeping my eye out for a lightly use PHD and right as I was about to order a new one a local deal came up on a lightly used unit. It's a McMillen x1975 witch was only used about 4 times. I will say one thing, the powder coat paint on these things stinks. The seller had 24" and 36" bits and demo'd the auger before I purchased. I was able to verify the model year to validate the sellers claim of only being a year old with Paladin so I made the purchase. I declined to buy the two augers as I felt I'd never have the use for them.
