Two guns my HPX had one like what you describe only it took me maybe 50 hours before I took it off. The manual says to clean it every 50 hours or whatever and when I took it off I don't see how any exhaust got out of it. Mine performance jumped once I took it off aswell especially my top end which had suffered after a few hours of use.

Spark Arresters - What is the Law?
California Vehicle Code Section 38366 Spark Arrester Law - Laws and Safety
"CVC 38366. (a) Notwithstanding Section 4442 of the Public Resources Code, and except for vehicles with mufflers as provided in Article 2 (commencing with Section 27150) of Chapter 5 of Division 12, no person shall use, operate, or allow to be used or operated, any off-highway motor vehicle, as defined in Section 38006, on any forest-covered land, brush-covered land, or grass-covered land unless the vehicle is equipped with a spark arrester maintained in effective working order.
(b) A spark arrester affixed to the exhaust system of a vehicle subject to this section shall not be placed or mounted in such a manner as to allow flames or heat from the exhaust system to ignite any flammable material.
(c) A spark arrester is a device constructed of nonflammable materials specifically for the purpose of removing and retaining carbon and other flammable particles over 0.0232 of an inch in size from the exhaust flow of an internal combustion engine or which is qualified and rated by the United States Forest Service.
(d) Subdivision (a) shall not be applicable to vehicles being operated off the highway in an organized racing or competitive event upon a closed course, which is conducted under the auspices of a recognized sanctioning body and by permit issued by the fire protection authority having jurisdiction."
US Forest Service Forest San Bernardino National Forest Order No. 5 - Roads and Trails
Pursuant to 36 CFR 261.50 (a) and (b) each of the following acts are prohibited on the identified areas under my jurisdiction:
4. Operating a vehicle in violation of the California Vehicle Code. 261.54d
Violation of these prohibition is punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 or 6 months imprisonment or both. See 16 USC 551.

For the 2% or less increase in performance this is a huge liability.
It's not that difficult to clean and maintain the arrester.
If we want to continue to ride on Federal land we should be responsible and do our part to keep it safe.
Fires are a real hazard everywhere.

We do not have to worry about wildfires like you guys out west and I am glad we don't. However, I went on a atv ride one time with a friend and we started at his friends house. They were leading us and we went thru some nice area. Next thing I know we are entering state land which is off limits to ATV's. I asked about it and they just laughed about it and kept going. I went back and loaded up my atv and went home. I then told my DEC officer friend about it and left it up to them to take care of the problem.
People who do things that violate the rules on state and federal land only hurt everyone. In our area, people like the guys I followed enjoy tearing up the state land and that looks bad for all the guys running ATV's. In the areas where wild fires are an issue what type of reputation will UTV owners have if a fire is caused by removing the spark arrestor. It will make no difference in the publics eye as to why, all they will know is a UTV caused this.
I would not throw the arrestors away but if you know there is a fire hazzard then put it back on and maintain it until the fire hazzard passes.

Pa has very,very few places state or federal you are permitted to ride atv's. The closest to me is over 80 miles and is only 10 miles of trails. Pa DCNR makes you register and liscense atv's and yet does not provide any where to ride. It is nothing more than another tax and a way of the state getting more money to waste. It also insures that if I sell my atv to another person the state has a way of tracking to collect sales tax again on the item. The way that is done is they send the renewal. If I don't renew they then send me notice that I need to do so or provide them with the information for the person who bought it. Taxes! It is a bunch of nonsense.
There are alot of trails for snowmobiles but atv's can forget it. I have had atv's for 25-30 years. We ride strictly on private land. I am sick of all of the beuocracy(hope that is spelled right). Regualtion and Taxes are destroying this country.
If I find somewhere to ride on Federal land I guess I will have to follow the rules.

I put removing a spark arrestor on a diesel in the same category as removing the stamps off a mattress. Take your diesel out at night, rev it to the moon and try to see a spark, you won't. On a gasoline engine I can see the sense in a spark arrestor, especially during dry weather, on a diesel its just silly.
I have to agree with Darkday, I could care less about riding on Federal land with all the rules and regulations and the rent a cops with nothing better to do than hassle law abiding citizens. No thanks.

In NY it is illegal to even use your ATV on your own land unless it is licensed and registered unless you are a farmer. I have had a friend stopped in our driveway by a State Trooper a few years back as he pulled onto the edge of the shoulder when he came out of the yard into our driveway. The Trooper tried to write him a ticket for using an unlicensed vehicle till I explained to him it was a farm vehicle being used on my farm. He eventually saw the light and left without writing a ticket.mikeyd

Your absolutely right about NY requiring registration(money) for atv's and then putting the extortion into the general fund where it is no doubt spent wisely.
Where I live the rent a cops hide in the woods and bust kids on dirtbikes and atv's who haven't yet been extorted. Another great use of taxpayer money. Hey, I feel safer.
