12 gauge slug through a window!

Two weeks ago, at a friend's house, there was a horse that was shot right above the coronary band by three idiots playing with a pistol at 11:00 PM. They were damned lucky they only hit the horse and not a house.

They were trying to hit a dumpster that was located behind a deer processing building that my friend has along the front of his pasture. Out of three shots fired, only one hit the dumpster. The other hit the horse and the third is unaccounted for.

The horse had to be put down.

The police said there was nothing they could as the deer processing building was a business that was open 24/7 during hunting season. Furthermore, he advised the owner of the horse (the horse was a boarder) to sue my friend.

I wonder if the police's reaction would have been the same had they hit a human?

So, because three people were complete idiots, one horse had to destroyed, a little girls heart was broken, and my friend is now faced with a lawsuit. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

If you don't know where your bullet is going to stop, don't pull the f'n trigger. Period.

At 1/2 mile, you should have heard the report, slightly after the bullet hit your house. If you didn't hear the shot, they were probably much further away.

You can reach out beyond 100 yards these days with a slug. I dropped a nice doe a few years ago at 125 yards. I was using Brenneke slugs.

A couple of years back, I had an interesting experience.
A "neighbor" (turned out that he lived almost half a mile away)
had purchased one of those black powder cannons.
You know, the kind that are used in parades or demonstrations.
After experimenting a while, he decided to actually load it with some home made projectiles. Apparently the first ones, which were wooden "plugs" werent' exciting enough.
He then made some out of pipe filled with concrete. NO JOKE /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
These were fired off at about a 45 degree angle.
I have no idea how much powder he was using, but these steel and concrete bits and pieces started dropping on houses. It took a while to figure it out but when we did there were some mighty upset folks.
This guy had no idea how far those rounds were going.
We did.
I believe the local sheriff actually brought in the old ATF for that one.

I may have - but if so it didn't register, high-power reports aren't unusual around here this time of year. I don't remember hearing anything. The way that ridge (maybe 80 feet high) sits between me and the lower elevation open areas further out - in order to clear the ridge - it would have had to either been an accidental discharge with the muzzle up or someone took a shot at a bird. Otherwise that ridge should have acted as a backtop. That's why I have a hunch it was someone close in those woods taking a shot at a deer on the ridge treeline.

By the time the angles and field elevations get back to a point where that might not be true the shooter would have been something like 1-1/2 - 2 miles out - and the guessed-at angle of descent of the round didn't seem to be that steep.

In any case - a shot I would never have taken, I'm paranoid about having a 100% certain backdrop and pick my stands accordingly.

That is on the floor laughing time. Unreal!

Kind of reminds me when I see certain parts of the world firing guns into the air.

Oh we heard the reports just fine.
I figured it was some guy doing something like that, maybe playing with some sort of gun.

Never even dreamed he'd be stupid enough to actually load it.

Guess it's never safe to understimate stupidity.

You were talking about rifle use in Indiana as being dangerous. New Jersy (the most densely populated state in the country) does not allow rifle hunting for Deere or small game, it's shotgun only, but ground hogs (woodchucks) can be hunted with any caliber and action type rifle, the only restriction I'm aware of is that there can never be more than 3 rounds in the gun at any time. So you can use a semiauto .308 rifle to shoot ground hogs, or for that matter something even bigger. I remember 35 years ago when I took my rifle test at the fish and game facility with my .22, seeing someone show up with a .300 Weatherby magnum. Insane isn't it?

I would imagine a shotgun slug would KO one of those effectively, but field dressing looks to me like a lot of trouble. Not to mention that good recipes are almost nonexistant.

Just kidding. Merry Christmas!

" does not allow rifle hunting for Deere "........makes me wonder if they allow hunting for Kubotas or Kiotis??? /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
