12 hp BRIGGS&STRATTON CAST IRON BORE REBUILD

HI ALL, THINKING ON REBUILDING MY CRAFTSMAN 12HP B&S CAST IRON BORE ENGINE, AM I WAISTING MY TIME? I AM THINKING BECAUSE THIS ENGINE IS INDUSTRIAL/COMMERCIAL QUALITY, SHE MAY BE WORTH IT.

If the reason of needing and overhaul is due to long life of service maybe replacment of rings and redo the valves with bearings and check wear on crankshaft.
How experanced are you with proper tools and experance in rebuilding of motors.

If the engine quit due to rod through the block or lack of oil . maybe be questionable since all parts were effected.
Is this a lawn mower or used for other purposes. I am biased with the name Craftsman since the engine was made to there specifications.

I take it your caps lock is stuck....on.

Briggs commercial/industrial just means the engine lasts a bit longer than the normal, throw away Briggs.

I'd can it and get another. Scrap is at 240 a ton.... Unless you just want something to tinker with. In that case rebuild it. It's only time and money.

THANKS FOR THE REPLY, THIS TRACTOR WAS SOMETHING I PICKED UP FOR FREE, HAVE HAD GOOD LUCK WITH CUTTING GRASS UP UNTIL THIS YEAR, MOTOR WAS NOT STARTING, BATTERY/STARTER/CARB ISSUES, GOT HER RUNNING BUT RUNNING RUFF AND RICH [RAW GAS COMING OUT EXHAUST], ADJUSTED CARB AND CHECK THE GOVENER SOMEWHAT, STARTED AGAIN BUT SMOKING AND RUNNING AWFUL. THROTTLED HER UP TO TRY AND CLEAR HER OUT THEN SHE UP AND SHUTOFF WITH HEAVY SMOKE. LEFT HER FOR DEAD. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS?

Cast ironcylinder sleeves? How old is it? Is it an L head?

Spend a few bucks and take in to get checked out for rebuild possibilities. Some of the cast iron B&S are not throw away.

i think the mower is a early 90s, i like the tractor and the way the grass is cut.

I would pull the head and take a look at the cylinder wall. If it's smoking you could have broke a ring and it's damaged the cylinder. If the cylinder looks good, just some minor scuffs from use then you could rebuild it. Or you could probably find an engine on ebay for the money it'll cost you to fix it.
