I've hung one under the truck for short moves. Just tie it to the bumper on each end and flag the end if it sticks out.

Huh, I've never thought of that.

Anyone who hauls long items on a regular basis really should purchase adequate ladder racks. However, for occasional use I've tied things on over the roof, and have found rubber heater hose works well to reduce sliding and protect the paint.
