Noobie with plenty of questions but starting with the battery. I just bought a 53 NAA and am wondering if it is a 6 volt or 12 volt system. Need to buy a battery and unsure of which to get. Any telltale advice is appreciated.

Basically, each cell is about 2 volts so count the holes/vents on the top.
3 holes on the top - 6 volt
6 holes on the top - 12 volt

Perfect, thank you for the input! I'm thinking of heading to Sears and finding the largest CCA for the size of the tray.

once ou find out bat size and type.. keep in mind the polarity and hook the new one up the same way.

the old generator setusp on 6v were oem positive ground.. though could be setup as negative ground.

if it has an alternator on it.. it is almost deffinately negative ground.

Picked up a Sears Platinum Group 35 last night, 750 CCA and one great warranty. I've been running these on all my vehicles and they have performed better than some of the popular AGM batteries on the market. I need to test fit it, but the advertised measurements had it just barely fitting.

OK, SG, got to use small words with me;-) The negative battery post was strapped to the engine and I wasn't going to do anything but replicate that. There is a Delco alternator on the front left/driver side of the tractor that is the shiniest part on the tractor and has obvious aftermarket brackets, hence the hesitation on the 12V vs 6V question. So from my limited knowledge on this, the tractor is set up as a negative ground, right?

OK, one more question for this thread. I have confirmed that the PO converted the Jube to a 12V system. Just before the coil there is a resistor in line. I am assuming this steps the 12V down to 6V before the coil? If I install a 12V coil I can remove the inline resistor, correct?

if it's a 12v system I'd put in a coil like a 16$ napa ic14sb and ditch the resistor.

and no.. the resistor doens't specifically drop it to 6v. it DOES reduce current, and will drop voltage.. but exact amount it drops is based on the total series resistance of the circuit, compaired to that fixed resistor value. etc. ohms law.. e=ir

Good advice and just what I was looking for. I guess the resistor takes just enough "heat" off the 12V alternator to keep the old coil happy. With a 12V coil will I need to change spark plugs?

Nope, spark plugs are indifferent to battery voltage.
