ford 1210
I have a ford 1210 with hydrostatic drive and was doing some brush hogging with a 4' brush hog, I hit a stump and the PTO stopped and Oil started leaking from between the PTO area and the drawbar. I bought the tractor and brushog last fall and this is the first time I put much strain on it.

any thoughts on where to start to look for cause of problem and will it hurt it to drive with significant amount of oil lost.

I'd expect you to be at risk. I'd not drive it. Can it be towed?
My industrial once blew a hose on the back side of the farm. I just left it be. During the week, bought new hose, bucket of oil and the next weekend, drove back out there to fix it in place.

Is it worth the risk/cost to drive it home and damage something else?

I would not attempt to drive a hydrostatic tranny knowing that it is potentially low on oil.
By PTO stopped did you shear the shear pin in the drive shaft or break something inside the rear end?

I would start with disconnecting the PTO shaft from the tractor. After that, grab the PTO output shaft and check for any excessive movement. Possibly the bearing for the PTO output shaft had failed.

Does your brush hog have a slip clutch or shear pin ?

its in the woods behind my house, I would only be driving it about 100 yards, just need to get it to the trailer to take it to the shop if necessary.

something inside the rear end, I am suspicious that they didn't have a shear pin in the PTO shaft,

but rather a regular bolt.

There is very little movement on the PTO output shaft.

Don't drive it. Look, I hate like hell to be the one to say this but chances are good that you are in for some pretty detailed mechanical work.

Hopefully, access to the PTO is external.... but most require that the rear be at least partly disassembled. That means a clean shop as well as a level of mechanical expertise. It isn't expensive, but it is time consuming.

The Hydrostatic drive requires oil both for lubrication and for drive power. They are easily damaged beyond repair if operated with low oil. Hydrostats are too involved for most home mechanics.

The fact that you are even asking the question about moving it tells me that you are going to need some help with this project. Driving it 100 feet with low oil in the Hydrostat can turn a mechanical PTO problem into something impossible to fix. Don't do that.

Does it leak oil when the tractor is sitting and not running ? I would be hesitant to move the tractor fearing that further damage would be done.

Broken parts could get between gears or shafts and cause more broken parts. I would carefully tow it.

Based on all the input I won't be moving it. I'll talk to the dealer in the morning to see if there is something simple I can check. The parts diagram looks fairly straight forward, and seems like it will simple to remove the outbound shaft.

I removed the shafts and the gears on the outbound shaft and counter shaft were tore up. The bigger problem is the rear case cracked below the shafts, I assume the broken pieces of gear got wedged in and busted it. So looking at salvage parts but I think this will be way bigger effort than I can do and maybe not worth hiring someone to do, the parts are no longer available so checking with salvage places now.

OK, now my question is what to do with a ford 1210 that will cost more to fix than it is worth, even with salvage parts. I will put it up for sale as salvage but don't expect to get much. Oh well I didn't pay much for it.

I you want to go through the work you could part it out. These tractors are getting hard to locate parts for.

If you have a good engine, someone would buy it to keep there tractor running. Flywheel, steering box, sheet metal, 4 wheel drive, hydraulic pump and rims are always in demand.

I will try that, I know none of the parts I needed are available anymore.

I see that Wengers has used parts for your model. I see they have a axle housing.

Check there website under used parts.
