One of the problems that develops in the magneto circuit is weakening of the permanent magnets. Alternators work kinda the same way, could the magnet in that circuit be feeling it's age?

Mike, I also have a 1984 Wheel Horse GT-1100 that i purchased new. One of the first changes was cutting the headlight wire and replacing the headlight switch with a SPDT switch that uses the original AC wire in the up position and 12v DC from the battery in the down position. The dealer said they used the AC for lighting because of the low output of the alternator (5 amps if I remember right). It is normal for the light to be dim when you are at less tham maximum RPMs. Hope this helps, Bill C
