Speaking of startup lubrication.. I think it has been discussed ( to death ) in the fuel forumn, that the big benefits from the synthetic oil is the superior startup lubrication.. as opposed to the very marginal 'fuel economy' gain..e tc. Perhaps this is an option for those in need of cold weather starting aids...

I live in Minnesota. My little 1720 starts at sub-zero temps. So, I don't think you will need to worry about it in WV - just keep your tractor in good shape, the glow circut working, use a good winter fuel (#1 diesel) and/or an anti-gel product such as Power Service, and a good winter oil, perhaps a synthetic. Have a good fresh strong battery. Get the fuel filter changed.

Some sort of propane/ lp heater can do the trick in an emergency. Dad has started several cold engines by sitting a 5 gal bucket of hot water under them with a tarp over, conveys enough heat to get things going in 15-30 minutes.

If you really want a plug in heater, a battery booster will not provide the 1000-1500 watts you need for 30 to 90 minutes. Not gonna work.

An oil heater is a poor choice, it will cook the oil.

You need 110v there somehow, and a tank, hose, or in-block heater of 1000+ watts. An hour will get you going, probably less if you gotta go.

The magnetic oil pan heaters throw very low watts - 200 I believe, but work well if you plug them in for a long time (all night?) & let the heat rise and you are in an enclosed building or have a tarp over the engine to contain the relatively small amount of heat they give.

In an emergency situation with a good battery, there are other ways to start a diesel, but I do not recomend them for several safety reasons. Either works, but can be dangerous with a manifold glow plug as Fords/ NH has, and can be very, very hard on connecting rods & engine parts. Would work for emergency start, but understand the part about your manifold blowing up if you use it wrong with the glow plug....

You can use rather dangerous means to get hot air into the air intake - works, lots of farmers do this with a cold engine stalled a mile out in the field, but there is a lot that can go wrong so I won't discuss it.

I would just get the right winter fuel or if your climate is too mild for this to be available then some Power Service type additive, a good winter oil, and make sure the battery and glow equipment is working well. Have a new fuel filter in it. You should not have any problems.
