I don't want to hijack your thread but I'm not sure where else to post this....

I noticed a few of you are into RC planes. I was thinking of getting an inexpensive setup (if that's possible) to take some aerial photos of my property and pond as I change the place. I'd love to be able to document the changes and use the photos to help me plan pasture/fence/house/barn locations as well as other changes.

Are RC planes easy to fly and/or take pics with?
Are ready to go outfits expensive?
Would a RC helicopter be a better choice?
Any suggestions?

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

ROBA:

RC planes are not all that cheap or easy to fly. they take a good bit of learning and can run into 100 or 1000's of dollars. Taking pics / aerial photos are one thing that they are good at. IF you know how to fly and have a good camera setup and know how to rig it to take pictures when you want. RC helicopters are VERY expensive. and even harder to fly. I have never seen one setup to take pictures though. It is probably possible and may even be a market for such a deal, easy setup launch and landing and excellent hover capabilities makes the copter a good idea.

I do have one I'm wanting to sell, rc plane that is, has 2 radios, gold label 4 channel with all gold contacts, it is a freedom 20 with HB .19 gas engine. wing span ~52" lenght ~48 (from memory.) fly's great but has not been up on many years. I moved into smaller place no room for it and no time to fly. I built it from scratch a while back. the 2 radios are set up so one primary and other can then teach 2nd person to fly (buddy system) primary guy flys plane UP and then pushes a switch so 2nd novice person can try & fly/learn) both radios are AIRTRONICS 4 channel. Have all the goodies to go with every thing to fly it. 12Volt starter & charger glow plugs hotshots You name it. anyone in OHIO looking? make ya a great deal, probably close to 1000 invested I'll let it go for 250.

If you want to fly i suggest you get a flight simulator thats the best way to learn. You can get into electric planes pretty cheap, helicopters are alot harder to fly then planes. You should check out mountainmodels.com they have an electric plane that is built for aerial photography i have one but i havent built it yet but its a very good design. You might want to check out rcuniverse.com
they have a forum just for aerial photography. Be warned the rc hobby is very addictive!

Photographing Property:

You could use a balloon with a camera on a timer tied to the bottom and get better results.

IMO, I would had to the local airport and see if you can buy some gas. Most private pilots do not have the "hireable" license, but offering to put some gas in their plane gets you around that issue.

Wicked,

Just curious as to whether you needed a building permit for your project? I'm in the process of building a 12x20' shed for my tractor and so far it's cost me almost $500 and I've yet to get a permit in hand nor am I able to touch an old 10x14' shed that the new one will hopefully replace. It needs to be inspected for asbestos, before it can be hauled off and put in one of our land fills. Your's is a fine looking addition, good job!

Where i am at if its built on skids(movable) its considered a portable building and no permit is required. If i were to build it on a slab or on piers i would have to get a building permit and electrical permit. They are pretty relaxed on permits around here but if you start building a 40x40 shop without a permit your gonna get in trouble.
