Pitiful I know. My tractor use comes in spurts depending on time of year. Unfortunately, there is only 13 hours of use since my oil change a year ago. Should I change the oil, based on the one year and not the hours? It still is golden yellow

I would, cheap insurance. When you so use it, is it for an hour or more? The hydro fluid may need to be changed based on time, not hours. Could have a condensation build up.

Most times its for an hour or more, not every time though. Condensation where? the oil crankcase or the Hydro crankcase?

Yes, I'd change engine oil yearly, no matter the hours.

Trans oil I go by hours.

As long as you run it an hour at a tume, the hst oil will be fine. Short runs can contribute to condensation build up.

Both the hydro and the engine oil will draw moisture. The hydro oil will absorb a considerable amount of moisture but the engine oil also builds up acids. The oil could be fine and you could do a oil analysis to see if it needs changed but that would likely cost as much as an engine oil change. I would change the hydro by the hours and maybe do a crackle test on a hot plate to see if has drawn excessive moisture.

Do you run it throughout the year or does it sit for long periods. If you run it all year than I would not worry about the oil. Change it if it sits for months at a time.

The one-year oil change recommendation is based on the fact that the additives lose their beneficial properties over time whether the engine is running or not. The base oil is stable and will stay the same, but running it will be more like running non-detergent oil.

I wouldn't change it until just before you put it away this fall. 13 hours is such a small time that the oil is essentially new. Just a waste to change it. When is the last time an engine failed due to a tiny exposure to acid? That is essentially a hypothetical concern IMO and not worth wasting perfectly serviceable oil over.

So your saying that you should not store oil for more than a year.:confused3:

Is there any data out there to support this claim of oil additive breakdown from sitting for a year? Where is the shelf life of oil published?

I'm not arguing, just looking for more than anecdotal evidence to support these reoccurring claims that I keep reading on here.

The primary source of acidic oil was the sulphur that used to be in diesel fuel. This is no longer the case as all the fuel is now ultra low sulphur. Change oil with 13 hours on it, year old or not....I wouldn't bother either.

I've never seen an expiration date on oil either.

In the sealed container, I don't think there is one.

The owners manual from the equipment manufacturers is where I see the recommendation most often. For example from Toyota's website:

Only Toyota vehicles in which 0w-20 synthetic oil is required (except for the 2TR-FE & 3UR-FBE Engines*) have been approved for extended oil change intervals of 10,000-miles/12-months. (However, you should continue to check the oil level regularly and top off if needed. That will help your engine get the full benefit of synthetic oil.)

Sometimes if it has been several years with little use I do change filters and top off. It was late 2010 or early 2011 when the changed the oil in the 1989 when the changed the oil in the Ford big block in the F700 that we are currently hauling the hay on. It will be about 200 miles total which may be about all it will see this year. Since it typically runs for 30 minutes or longer if started I am not too worried about the motor oil going bad. If I had it out on the road trying to sell it and moved it 50 foot every two weeks to mow around it for three years then I would be VERY concerned.

A tractor that runs for 5 minutes putting out a roll of hay every week and does nothing else I would change annually at min.

That doesnt say the additive go bad.

Bought my car with 100,000 warranty including service. It goes by mileage but they will change it once a year if the customer insists. Service reset gives 22,000 miles between changes. Previous one of same maker went strictly by mileage and they wouldn't budge on changing early unless I wanted to pay. That one reset to 15,000 miles so it has averaged 15 months between changes and is now at 150k. It's my beater car now so plenty of short hops and most of the winter driving. So at least some makers aren't hung up on annual changes whether you need it or not.

There is a shelf life on oil. I'm not sure where you find it, but I do know for a fact that there is. I'm a Supply Technician on a Marine Corp Base and we have a Hazmat Warehouse that has numerous differerent oils stored in it and they all have some type of shelf life. Our shelf life date is tracked in the computer system. I don't work with the material much so I don't know how the date is determined or anything, but I do always have to check the shelf life date when performing inventories on it.
