What pto range should I use for the tiller???

I am not 100% sure, but I have been told that all 3 pto ranges and for the tiller, depending on what you are digging into. Could be wrong. Pennwalk will know, and others.

Just about every low powered {~~under 65 PTO hp} 3-point/ or tow PTO driven implement sold in the U.S. is 540 rpm based - ASAE standard...

Above that hp range, you get in 1000 rpm implement gearboxes...

I seem to remember reading that the Japanese tillers that came with the grays do run in more than one PTO speed but I hope we will hear from an expert. Wouldn't it be great to have a Japanese friend who could translate all the stickers on your gray equipment? Only a rare few American implements use 1000 rpm all the others run at 540. 540 is the bottom position of the PTO lever usually and if in doubt use that one.

I don't read japanese, so I just base my tiller speed on the soil conditions. I usually start with low pto speed if the soil is hard or has not been tilled. I move up in speed to really turn the soil if needed. In this part of South Texas, we have a very clay laden soil base, and it is impressive to watch one of these tillers make clay chips.

I was not sure how this little thing would handle never tilled ground but it sounds like it can take it. Here in Va. we have some red clay but most garden spots tend to be in the topsoil. It will be interesting how it handles the new ground. What about rocks? I think mine is a 1000 model, it seems to be built well, just don't know until you try it I guess. Thanks for the info..

I, along with Chris, remember reading that if it is a Yanmar tiller, then it should be ok to run the thing at 1000RPM. They were designed to work together. But please someone correct me if I'm wrong.

It is a two point tiller and you can use all three speeds. Start slow.
