Grading 1301D box blade capability

Hi Everyone. Been reading this website at lunch everyday for about a year. Decided to finally join. I have a Yanmar 1301D. I am strongly considering purchasing a 42" box blade to keep the hump and weeds out of my 350 ft long gravel driveway....I hate using poisons. I have 200 lbs of suitcase weights on the front. The driveway is packed pretty hard. Do you guys think this attachment is going to do the job well. This is probably the only task I will use it for....Thanks

Welcome CEB055,

Your tractor is not shy of the power necessary to use a 42"-48" box blade...It's usually about front end weight AND traction. If you can keep the front end down and the tires from spinning, you shouldn't have any difficulty ripping up and manicuring 350' of gravel. Small tractors just take a little longer and smaller bites .

Thanks for the reply Mark777. Thats what I was hoping to hear. I have used quite a few implements before, but never a box blade. I may actually be able to utilize it for putting in some food plots on my hunting property, I have a lot of thumb size saplings that I need to get the roots out, before I can plant.

Measure the outside width of your rear tires tracks. Let that guide you. That tractor should easily be able to pull a box blade that can cover your tire tracks.

I have a 4 ft box behind my 1602D and I keep about the same length of driveway smoothed off with it just fine, I do have 4 wd tho, and an FEL for front weight. But like the others have said, just take smaller bites, more seat time!

Thanks Knute and Jagmandave for the info. Mine is also a four wheel drive. As Mark777 told me I will probably be restricted by weight in the front end. I have the 200 lbs of suitcase weights, but it is nothing compared to the FEL. Hey the best part is, it will be a new tool in the arsenal. One way or another I can convice the wife it was a good idea. She hates the grass in the driveway, so she is all for this one. I have really been impressed by this tractor so far......it's small but unbelievably powerful.

The bucket on a loader will work well on the grass and take out the crown. not to good at moving gravel from side to side but is a killer on holes.

Just wanted to take the time to thank everyone for their input. After close to two weeks of trying to procure a used 48 in box blade, I gave up and purchased a new one from TSC. It's a Kingkutter. You guys were right on the money. My tractor had more than enough guts to rip up the driveway. The weeds and the center hump are gone. Everyone that has stopped over thought I had fresh gravel delivered. I have had this tractor for about a year and have to say I love it. It amazes me how little fuel it uses also. I thought about ripping up my neighbors driveway up while he was out of town, just to keep working it,but decided he might not appreciate it!! Thanks again everyone!

That sounds like me. Every time my neighbor goes off for the weekend, I sneak over and cut his grass. I wonder if he,s figured out who's doing it yet?
