Hi,
Name is Gary, from Norfolk Va.
I think I posted earlier on the wrong forum.
I just bought this tractor, knowing the steering was broke.
Took it apart today after filling the pump and finding fluid gushing out from under dash.
Found that the steering cylinder assembly case is cracked/broke.
I guess I will have to just keep looking for a replacement. Anybody have any ideas?
Another thing I am wondering. Could this be the effect of another problem? Is it going to happen again after replacing the (I know is going to be astronomical cost) assembly. I did find the left steering shaft cover with a loose nut on the left stud and nothing in the right hole (I suppose needs a bolt)?
Another thing I am wondering- how does these steering gears supposed to be lubricated? They are and have been quite dry on this tractor.
Thanks very much,
Gary

Gary, have you spoken to anyone that might could tig weld it back together. That is if you have the broken plug from it. -kid

Welding will be tricky for the o-ring to seal properly and the mounting surface to be kept perfectly flat. I'm not sure of the material whether it can be welded or brazed. The rest of the components appear badly rusted and the seal surface may be damaged enough that it will not seal the standard oil from leaking. It may have to be filled with what others refer to as corn head grease. The brake pad you refer to is probably a wear plate that can be shimmed to adjust the backlash between the rack and pinion. Replacement steering columns are not cheap. I priced one to add power steering to my tractor and am still using the "Jack Armstrong" steering system.

Kid, thank you for your help with the Agco site. Great site!
I have found a new cylinder online for 400 bucks.
Namy, what is this "corn head cheese" you refer to? I do know that these gears need to be lubricated some how. Does it call for reg motor oil? Wondering because I need to decide how much emphasis I need to put into the gaskets and seals?
Thanks,
Gary

Corn head grease is the lubricant others have used in the steering gear box. That reduces the leakage problem with bad sealing surfaces yet give good lubrication. I'm not sure what the owners manual specifies for normal lubricant off the top of my head. I'll have to check the manual when I get home or someone else can answer that question.

Checked the op's manual and the steering gear housing uses 1 U. S. quart of M1129 or M1129A oil. This is the same UTF used in the transmission, differential and hydraulic system. This is fairly light oil and leakage may be a problem if not sealed properly. The power steering pump uses 1 quart of automatic transmission fluid type A or non foaming hydraulic fluid.

Well I got it back together. This tractor was not made to steer at a standstill!
Just glad nothing broke or leaked too bad.
Going to start removing stumps and regrading my backyard now. (Picked up a nice heavy "BushHog" 5'6" box).

So now the 3 point wont move.
Last night it wouldn't move until I moved a control (on the top case) that was supplying the snow plow remote control.
I don't know why there had to be a control here as there is the main one controlling the snow plow.
Last night, after not being able to make 3 point work, I moved this control lever to the midpoint position, and wholaa! it worked. Went to bed.
Won't work today, no matter what levers or controls I fool with.
BTW. the night I brought it home, (with the snow plow controls attached) it worked.
Should I take a side cover off and try to understand the linkage, or am I possibly be missing something simple?
Thanks
