I have a 1401 that only fires on 2 cylinders
I put a new injector in the cylinder that wasnt firing,
but no results it still runs on 2.
It starts easy & runs good but only on 2.
And yes its getting fuel to it
Does any one have any solutions??
Im ready to pull my hair on this one (not much left anyway)
Thanks Tractor Ernie

Probably needs more testing than you can do with the tools available. Could have a bad injector pump, burnt valve, hole in the piston, etc......

sounds like a real fuel saver to me

Ernie, how can a person tell if a diesel cylinder is firing or not?
That's apparently an unusual problem.

The injector I put in was brand new !!
To tell if the cylinder is not firing
I disconected the fuel line to each injector, one at a time.
if it makes a difference its firing
If no difference, its not firing, that simple.
I am leaning toward a stuck valve?
Thanks Ernie

I knew that......should have, duh!!. Does the 1401 have a compression release inspection/adjustment cover that you can remove and see into? Maybe something wrong there?

Ernie, first thing, does the cylinder have compression?

If it is a diesel and getting fuel then it has to be either fuel timing or compression. As the other cylinders run, I'd figure it to be compression. If it were mine I'd first pull the valve cover to make sure the compression release wasn't hanging up or adjusted wrong. While there, check that the valve lash is approximently correct. If these are ok, then pull that injector back out and put in a DIESEL TYPE compression gauge. The gauge will be a bolt-up type that mounts via an adapter just like the injector does. It needs over 500 lbs/sq in. of pressure to fire...and it prefers upwards to 650 psi.

I had exactly the same problem with my 1610D. I knew it didn't have the power it should and ran a bit rough but didn't realize it was running on only two cylinders. When I took it in to a local dealer the mechanic tested each injector just as you did. He loosened the connection between the injector lines and each injector one by one. When the first two were loosened the engine speed decreased and it acted as though it was going to stall. But when the third was loosened there was no difference whatsoever--hence the conclusion that that cylinder was not firing.

It is what he did next that applies most directly to solving your problem. What he did was to loosen the injector line to the cylinder that was not firing at the injector pump. Once he did that it was clear that no fuel was being sent out by the pump--although a little was being sent when the throttle was off, of all things. This test confirmed that the problem was a stuck pump cylinder, or whatever they call them, in the injector pump. I suspect this could be your problem as well. Hope you test this before you tear the head off the engine (These guys thought at first that I had a stuck valve or a bad connecting rod).

The end of my story is that I got the injector pump rebuilt and it runs like a top. Good luck with yours.
