1430 steering leak

 / 1430 steering leak #21
Uh oh, bad news while playing around with it some more today, I noticed it was leaking from teh bottom of the valve, instead of the top like last time. I gave Terry a call and he said they can't repair the bottom of the valves so having no other choice, I bought a new one for $500.

Uh oh. Aside from the complicated guts, the valve is basically a stack of square washers with big skinny o-rings between them, held together with four bolts. Attached is a picture of my disassembled unit. My guess is the tech misaligned an o-ring when he rebuilt the unit, or he didn't torque the tie bolts correctly, or one of your hose fittings is leaking. Before spending $500, you might see if you can spot exactly where the oil is seeping out. Try cleaing everything really well and sprinkling talcum powder on the whole thing. Then when you turn the wheel, the leaky spot will wet and discolor first. If it's between the washers, the PT tech messed up. If it's at one of the hoses, well...:p

Good luck,
Sedgewood

I got the new valve yesterday and it seems like a new design. The only markings on it are HGF 16226. I'll let everyone know how the install goes today. Of course I have to go get some hose adapters so I can hook it up.

I attached a pic of the new and old units together. The red arrow shows were it was leaking.

Finally some good news! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
I installed the new unit and all is well for the time being. This concludes my $620 journey through the land of hydraulic steering valves. Time to go dig some trenches! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You havn't had your pt very long have you? Didn't pt offer to send you a replacement under warranty? Glad you are back digging dirt.

I'm the 3rd owner so I don't have a warranty.

I think PT owes you a refund for the shabby state of the valve that was returned in the state that it was, leaking in a different place , which is definitely due to them rebuilding the valve. I think they stuck it to you on that new valve. Way over priced. We all can get on the net and let them know how we feel about the state of the manuals and way over priced parts. They should also pay for the labor that we do .Those people that are close by, don't have to send parts back, they just drive it over and give it to them to fix.

Anyway, I'm glad that the new valve is working ok.

I would send the old valve back to them for a rebuild or keep the valve and demand a refund.

If we let them get away with this kind of crap, they will keep doing it.

It looks like we who live far away are paying for the warranty of those who live close in. I was told that the warranty was only for parts. Why do people who live close to Tazewell get a better warranty.

Unless you get a core deposit back by sending it back to pt I beleive I would either have it rebuilt or take it apart myself and see if it maybe some kind of contaminant was between those washers or it maybe something hadn't been put back properly. At least if you took it apart yoourself you would be able to see firsthand what is in that valve.

PT did give me a bit of a discount on the new one because I had already paid for the rebuild. Maybe I'll take the old one to a local hydraulic shop and see what they think.

Not to make you feel bad or anything (yeah, right!) but I also think PT dropped the ball on this one. My guess is one of the thin o-rings dislodged as PT was putting the valve together. May I suggest you get a copy of the service manual? The manual is quite well written and will be helpful in pointing out some quirks in the assembly you or your hydraulic shop need to watch for. I took mine to a shop and they had never seen one before. I managed to get it out of there before they botched it completely and rebuilt it myself, with a seal kit from PT.

Go to Parker's site and click on "Service Maintenance" to download a PDF copy.

Here's my web page on the rebuild. I've been working on my site and while it's not finished, I think it's viewable in most browsers now. I hope /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
