Wow! That was a lot of work for something so small. You did the right thing by biting the bullet and doing it right.

Reminds me of one time when i was in the Navy one of my techs dropped a socket down in the tail of and EA6B aircraft. That plane was down for and entire week while we took that plane apart to find it. Glad he owned up to it because something like that could have crashed that plane later.
being shot off a catapult and landing on an aircraft carrier puts extreme stress on aircraft.

You know, for a 25/30 yr old tractor (like mine), it's amasing how good everything looks internally. The gears look like they will out last us all.

Great job on the fix. You did it right and would have been sorry if you didn't. Just the thought of waiting for something to happen, knowing it was in there, is enough to do what ever is necessay to get it out.

The internals also look great on my F13D, and never any metal particals in fluid changes, even though it's difficult to not hear/feel some sort of gear engagement (not always agrind, but it's not like a Lexus going into gear).

I don't know about the long term quality of the newer model Japanese tractors, but I have absolutely worked the dog out of late 70's and early 80's models Japanese tractors, all Kubotas. B7100 and B8200 4wheel could not be destroyed. This is the first Yanmar I've owned, and it appears to be equally as tough given its age and very good condition. I'm not sure my prior Kubotas would have held up this good.

Yes I was determined to find the little rascal. I could just inagine what it would do if it got wedged between the final drive gear and the case!! Who know what all would have been destroyed. A hardened pin does not do good things to hardened gear teeth. So yes I am thankful that I found it, but I knew that I just had too.

Actually, once I decided to bite the bullet and pull it down until I found the pin, it went pretty fast. The spring rollpin on the dif lock cooperated, and everything came apart pretty easily. It would have been much faster to just do it from the beginning rather than trying all of the ways that I tried to get the little thing. Everything short of California's suggestion of turning it upside down and shaking it!! :D

I was very pleased with the condition of the gears in the trans. The front drive gears looked good too when I had that apart awhile back. Only the PTO gear for 2nd speed was a little sharp, but the rest looked good. Not bad for a tractor with a serial number of 409--guaranteeing that it was made in 1979!! So it is a full 30 years old.

Thanks to all.

Mike

Mike, now that things are back to normal, I have an unrelated question you might know the answer to.

Do you know if a YM187D is substantially identical to a 1510D? Also is a 1610D essentially the same thing, and what is its US equivalent?

I see a 187d near here for $2500 and I'm curious if it would meet my needs. Chould that pull a 4 ft rotary mower or 4 ft disc? Mike, anybody????

I understand that a 186 is the standard equivalent of the 1510--however there are some significant differences too. The entire front drive axle is different--a total different design. The hyd system of the 186 has a convenient little block for taping into the hydraulics with PB. etc.

The 1610d has one more hp than the 1510d/186, but it is 350 lbs heavier, 19 inches longer and 5 inches wider than the 1510.

I understand that the 187 is essentially the same as the 186, I usually see them listed as "186/187", but I do not know the differences at all. i do believe that a 186d could pull 4 foot implements. The front drive on these makes a huge difference. Yesterday I was working in clay mud that was so slick that when smeared on concrete it was like walking on ice, but the 4 wheel drive pulled me though time and time again.

I know that I have really enjoyed the compactness of mine. I have had several jobs with the scoop because I could fit down the sidewalk and behind the house where a larger tractor could not go.

That 187d for $2500 sounds like a great deal!! It should certainly pull hte 4 foot implements. Definitely look into it. I love the powershift. Once you get used to it, it will be hard going back to the gear grinding!!

Hmmm. I took another look at the guy's ad, and it's a 186D! So your advice is spot-on.

More and more, this looks like a good idea.

My 240 (2wd) is too tall to get close to the trees at the tight spots in the orchard, such as this boundary row next to the neighbor's new vineyard. I think the 186D would be just right to duck down and go under those limbs. In fact if it could pull this 6 ft disc in a second pass after loosening the ground with the 4 footer, I could probably disc right up to the treetrunks. Hmmm.....

Thanks for your reply. That is very encouraging!

Congratulations Mike on the "fish and catch" job. Lot of work for such a small piece but could have done some "large" damage!

I almost bought a 187 2wd locally myself. I have heard the 4WD has some uncommon and strange design, you may ask a dealer on this, they can advise better than me.

California, your orchard looks very nice would love to see more pics. I dropped you a PM. I had forty-two apple trees on my farm at one time, red delicious, golden delicious, grimes golden, macintosh, and jonathon.
