Massey Ferguson 1533/1525
Can anyone suggest what size bush hog/rotary cutter I should use with this tractor? I won't be doing any heavy mowing, mostly cleaning up pasture behind livestock.

Thanks.

Use a 5' mower, it will fit your tractor best.

I have a 1433v, the previous model. Check my post "1433v Questions", just a few before this post, for good advice on choosing implements. spb1971 is correct on the 5' size. Welcome to TBN!

Some suggest a size larger than that but a 5' is by far the best size for your tractor.

I thought the 5' would be the best as well. However, the dealer suggested a 6' cutter, saying that the tractor can more than handle it in light cutting and that with R4 tires, a 5' mower won't even cover the tractor width. More thoughts?

That is the question. How light do you want to cut? I know if I have to cut grass that was no more than a foot high, I wouldn't like it. Not saying that it wouldn't cut grass more than a foot high, but just using that as an example of what he might be referring to as light. When I go cutting, I want to know that no matter what I want to cut that I can do it. For the life of me, I can't understand why the dealers are all ordering industrial tires. Unless it is to make the tractors look bigger or tougher. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif I do understand why some customers need to use them, but can't understand why almost all dealers order them only.

The dealer where I got mine said that most people he sold to did not want Ag tires because of damaging the lawn, but wanted more traction than turf tires. I wanted Ag tires but did not want to spend the money to change them out.

Lawn damage is one of the things that I understand. I can also understand them being used where a large part of the use is on hard surfaces such as concrete etc.

I would think the 1533 would handle a 6' bushhog, with the greatest problem being the weight of the cutter rather than the tractor HP.
Bushhog's website recommends 30-40HP for their light duty 6' model, but 40HP minimum for the medium duty 286 model. If you get into really heavy cutting you may have to gear down, but I believe it'll cut OK. However, you may have to use your brakes to steer at times if you go with the 286 or one of that weight. Just my opinion, but I would go with one that covered my tracks. Good luck.

With this statement , It makes me ask is a 1533 & a 1433 the same width ? Because my 1433 is right at 60" outside to outside of the tires or very close... which would cover my tracks with a 5' hog...
To be honest when I hog I have used my 135 with 38hp and when cutting stuff as high as the hood there is enough power to run right through anything in its path with my 5' hog , I haven't as of yet tried my 1433 with the hog...

The 135 is wider than the 1433 by about 10" or so and It hasn't made any real difference with it not covering the full width of the tracks even when I was just doing an open field(thats just me though), But I see your point about covering the full width of the tractor...

I guess the main concern is really about the full use of the hog, If at any time in your future you can see the possibility of cutting heavy brush or saplings I would IMO go with the 5' , but if you know you only be cutting an open field with no real heavy brush I would think a 6' hog would work as well ... That is your decision .
