I started the tractor with the seat setting on and locking the 3pt lever in the down or up position. It made a racket so I stopped it. When I restarted it (very difficult) it spit black smoke and the Hydraulic pump became hot. Does anyone have an idea what happened? How can I tell if the pump is damaged (it seems to turn freely)? Could it be a sheer pin? Could it be repaired or do I need a new pump? Thanks.

The lever was probably in the up position. When the 3 point was fully up the relief valve should have opened. The relief valve may be stuck open. The best way tell the condition of the pump is to plumg a pressure gauge in the system. Pumps usually can not be repaired.
