I'm playing around with my new toy trying to coax the electrical accessories back to life. The wire for the oil pressure sensor is disconnected and taped off, but no sign of the sender. From an exploded parts diagram, it looks as though it was originally in the block just below the oil filter; mine has a plug in that spot. What am I missing here? Thanks for any information.

Sounds like you're missing an oil pressure switch.

And if I wasn't missing it, would it be in that spot where I currently have a plug?

Here's where they put it on YM240/YM2000.

My sender failed so I temporarily put a gauge on it to see what was going on. I wrote about it in this thread.
Low oil pressure? No, bad sender!
That thread is a little longwinded :D but it answers several questions I see posted here frequently.

Yes, that is the correct place. On my YM165D I replaced the oil sender with a threaded "T" connection and that gave me the ability to send oil pressure info to both the stock idiot light and also to a mechanical pressure gauge. Be aware that the thread in the block is not NPT, it is BSP - a tapered pipe thread that is common to many Japanese manufacturers. Most automotive houses have the correct thread adapters even though they might not know exactly what or why. Some gauge sender kits even come with a packet of adapters that includes the right one.
good luck, rScotty

Thanks - probably saved me an afternoon of sweating, swearing, and wondering why the NPT fitting wouldn't fit!

You are welcome. Great tractors. Unfortunately it isn't quite that simple. The truth is that the NPT thread will almost kinda fit. Just close enough so that with enough brute force you can get it to make a couple of threads and that will sometimes work. And once that happens then the thread won't easily fit NPT or BSP. So just go easy, get a couple of differnt threaded adapters and try them. Automotive speed shops often have the thread adapters in brass and that is a much better deal when trying to match an unknown thread condition in your cast iron block.

Not every parts guy will know about BSP, and because BSP is so common in Japanese cars that it is often referred to as metric....which it isn't of course. True metric has its own differnent threadform for tapered pipe.

But who cares what they call it. Just get a few adapters, clean out the threads, and go slow. Once you get a good "T" connector into the block you have all the options.

A couple of more notes: On the YM165D keep an eye on the clearance between an oil gauge sender "T" fitting and the steering linkage. It's close.

Also, you can do the same to the water temperature gauge sender too. It's up there higher on the block. Same BSP thread form. I forget if it is the same thread diameter or not.

I to have a ym165d and agree with Rscotty the unit is just below and aft of the oil filter .These a very good tractors.Rscotty when you hooked up the t for the oil sending unit does that send a copper tube to your dash, or is it an electrical wire to the dash ym165pete

Mine is a hard nylon tube that conveys the oil pressure directly to the boudon tube type mechanical dash gauge. That avoids the problem of vibration hardening of a copper line, but of course it is not as abrasion resistant. Because of the low oil pressure of the Yanmar 155/165 at idle, I wanted to insure a very accurate low reading. Doing it again I'd just as soon use a good gauge with an electrical sender....if I could find one that was linear over a 2 to 50 psi range at a reasonable price.
