Does anyone know which flywheel part numbers are compatible? Apparently the replacement ring gears are no longer available. This is a Briggs 303447 1279-E1 on a 3165.

Are the 18hp flywheels different? I may want to repower with a new short block.

You can check part numbers here - Briggs and Stratton Parts Lists for Briggs engine parts

While B&S has a high rate of interchange I doubt very much these would interchange because the Vanguard is Japanese made and the Intek is not. You may be able to get just the ring gear and replace it OR measure other ring gears for compatibility.

I'd found those lists, there are several part numbers. Best I can tell 808770 is the right flywheel, but also no longer made. For some reason the replacement ring gear is also discontinued. That's all I need. According to the parts list for 3165 it's 807531, which was replaced by 690892 which is also no longer available. Found a 808774 on ebay, but the seller seems confident it's not right because I need the 808770. Who knows...they look identical but you can't find real specs on any of them anywhere.

The correct flywheel for your engine is the 808770 which converts to the 844818 flywheel conversion kit. $289 but may be worth it if the engine is in repairable shape. Short block is $730. Complete replacement engine 305447-3079 is $1235, but requires installing the flywheel, blower housing, and fan group from the original engine to make it fit properly.

Being a Briggs dealer has its perks sometimes.

Don't want to hijack the thread... But I need a fan-flywheel (# BS 843977) for my CC HDS 3185 with B&S 330447 1206-E1. It is no longer available. Been searching the Internet for a used one without success. It's a plastic fan that supports the rotating screen. It's be great if someone knows of another part that might be compatible. I can find nothing.

I found one on ebay that I hope is the right one, it's off a cub with a 303447 1147-E1. If not, maybe I can at least use the ring gear. If I have to replace the block, I will be going with a 35 model 18/20hp block. I suppose the flywheel will work ok. Looks like the change on the 18 was adding the plastic fin setup.

DKCDKC, don't you mean a model 350447, that should be the 18.

That is the correct flywheel for your engine 808770 on the engine you found.

Thanks for the catch... I did mean a 350447 1206-E1. The original part number was BS-808082 and that became BS 843977, according to the Cub Cadet parts diagram and the Web. The B&S link in this threat shows it also as 690911... Unfortunately it is unavailable under any of those three numbers. Suggestions welcome. The part I have has its blades, but the plastic mounts that held the rotating screen are broken off. I wonder if I could just operate the engine without the screen? CC has ascreen over the whole area, but I guess stuff could get sucked in still.

Thanks RANDYT. I got the flywheel in today and it does appear to be correct with the only difference being it has a steel ring gear. Now it seems that both of the starters that I have are the wrong model. They have 14-tooth metal pinion gears which do not mesh with the ring gear. (I'm pretty sure this is what was done to break this to begin with)

Now I have to figure out which starter is correct. I had ordered a new drive kit for these starters that came with a nylon gear in case the ring gear was aluminum like the original. It is a 16-tooth and seems to mesh ok, but I can't find a metal gear for that type bendix. The machine parts list calls for starter 795121 starter which appears to be the type drive on the ones I have. The 303400 pdf shows starter 691564 for steel ring gears which appears to be a different style bendix. I'm guessing I'll need a whole new starter like the 691564?

the 691564 starter is what my briggs dealer list for the correct starter. that starter supercedes to part number 846451 now.
