17.7 ave MPG for the Titan Cummins?

Seems trucks these days are more alike all the time. As far as diesel engines go, I would think one of the companies would start offering different diesel engines in the same truck body like they do with gas engines. A mileage engine and a towing engine. Diesels are hard to beat at both ends of the spectrum.

Back once upon a time before the EPA ruined the diesel with emissions equipment and made the price of diesel rise above gasoline with ULSD. Back when gassers had carburetors. It is now however into the 2016 model year. The players and times are different now.

Agree for the most part except pulling power. No substitute for diesel grunt on a pull.

Maybe Motor Trend was just being honest in their testing? A DI gasser in the same test would obtain about 15.6mpg with a cheaper truck using cheaper fuel with lower vehicle service costs.

I am getting 20 mpg average mixed with my 2011 GMC 4.8 3:42 4wd, my 04 5.3 3:73 4wd got 23 mpg highwasy, 21 mixed. I hear the new gen DI trucks are just as good, if not bettet.

Next truck will be sn HD gasser, not going diesel. They are to expensive, too complex and require too much maintenance.

Motor Trend is reporting that they got 15.8 mpg city and 20.8 mpg highway with the Titan Nissan gave them to test. They have a very elaborate test. Using the same test they got 18.3 city and 27.2 highway with the Ram Ecodiesel. I was expecting 25 mpg on the highway to justify the extra cost of the diesel. Link

That's about what my 2006 F350 gets. I do right at 17 mpg city and 23.6 highway. I'm disappointed!

8500 lb gvwr and 2000 lb payload tells me it's a pretty heavily built truck. Empty weight must be in the vicinity of 6000 lbs.

Bet it's every bit of that. My 2012 F150 Ecoboost weighs 5800#.

How much pulling power do you want? A few years ago a 318 was good enough to haul 80,00bs of freight plus the weight of the rig . From coast to coast over two mountain ranges . Now some people think they need 400+ HP in a pickup to haul a horse trailer or motor home . It's highway driving, not drag racing.
As for a gassers bad habits with early down shifting and screaming engines. Mine did do that and it was horrible .I fixed that by changing the rpm and ground speed shift points. I have had passengers ask did I swap a diesel into my gas truck .

Agreed! I anyone needs to win a race pulling a trailer, let me know what route they are taking so I can avoid it.

These diesel hp wars need to stop, they need to improvr mpg, not hp.

I am getting close to those numbers out of my 2015 F350 srw. If I keep it around 55 on 2 lane roads I have seen 19+. Most tanks of fuel I am averaging 17 in mixed driving, beyond me why anyone would by that truck. As with mine I have a 1ton not a light 3/4 ton.

If you don't need a 1 ton most of the big 3's 1/2 tons will handle most weekend warriors in a lower maintenance and lower priced gas powered package

Chris

I've known plenty of people with F-350 diesels and none even got close to 23.6 MPG. As usual you are full of it because of your strange love affair with a blue oval that you love so much you talk about it constantly and use as your avi.

It's well known that the Cummins engine will get the best mileage in older Diesels as well as how the older Ford Diesels perform. To claim you are getting close to 25 Mpg with a f-350 is ridiculous. Fortunately most of us smell what you are shoveling and know better than to believe stuff like this.

To the OP I am somewhat surprised and disappointed with those numbers. I would not buy the Dodge 1/2 tone diesel but I would consider a Cummins in a Nissan. I'd really like to see a s-10 or ranger size truck with a little 4 cylinder diesel that got 35 mpg. It strange how there are so few choices in small pickups.
