My YM 1700 temp light comes on when I use my Finish Mower in grass. I can run it all day in gear as long as I don't put it in grass.I have put a new head GASKET on it .clean the Radiator and a new radiator cap.when the light comes on it has never boiled water over in the Overflow Bottle . I don't know what to do.

When mine does this, it usually throws grass into the front of the tractor and the fan sucks it into the radiator stopping it up.

Cleaning the radiator doesn't guarantee that it has full flow or cooling capacity, just that it's clean. There can still be areas/sections that are closed off from circulation due to scale, etc. We have become more and more convinced that radiators are one of the prime bad spots on these units. Just consider their age alone. We have seen many overheating issues resolved with a new radiator, and the cost is reasonable. Those units that depend on thermosiphon are particularly vulnerable to reduced flow.

The light should come on before you have water/steam puking out of the system....once you get that far you're in trouble. And was your head gasket bad, or did you just change it because of overheating symptoms?

You could have a bad or incorrect sending unit. The light should come on at about 248 deg and go off at about 233 deg. Some people use the sending unit for a YM2000 because it is cheaper than the YM1700. The sending unit for the YM2000 comes on at 212 deg and goes off at 197 deg. The rediator cap should be 13lbs.

P.S. I have the water pump kits for the YM1700

I just change it because of overheating symptoms. It has a new 13 lbs cap on it.The radiator has been boiled and clean at a shop he said it was in good shape before he work on it . He said it did not need cleaning . But I told him to do it any way. Are they any way to check the sending unit or just buy one. I don't want to put a water pump kits on it because I am going to sale it if I can get it fix .and get a 2210 or 2000 YM .But I don't want to sale it if it is running hot. I need my sleep at night.

Have you back-flushed the block? Remove the upper hose at the rad outlet, shove a garden hose in the rad hose and seal with rags, turn on the water and see what comes out the rad top. I believe on most/all gauges, 12 oclock, straight up is about 190 degrees. No vehicle I have ever owned has ever normally run above that on the gauge. My YM2000B, waterpump, but no thermostat, runs about 160 or less.

Just buy one. It's the easiest and fastest way.

The water pump is the best money I spent on my 1700. I don't have to worry about it now.

What mixture of antifreeze are you using? Too much antifreeze (like the typical 50/50 mix) will overheat the tractors with no water pump.

I will try to back-flushed the block and see what that will do . 300 is a lot to spend on it to sell it.but if I have to I will .Just don't want to .
