Have a 1700 Ford, just had head reworked (cracked). Used it first time since repair for about three hrs, temp stayed just right, ran ok no probelms. Started it up the next day and water was shooting out the exhaust. I stopped it checked the water level and had to add about 16oz. The tractor started and ran OK for about 45 minuted w/no problem. Do I still have a problem? Ran th etractor again today about 30 minutes no problem, but when I cranked her up I still had white smoke coming from the exhaust.
Any advise would be appreciated.

Thanks Ray

head is probably still cracked and when you ran it the first time it heated up and expanded the crack somemore

I did not retorque the head bolts. Man thats not good news. Driving it this afternoon, I did not get a quarter of the smoke I got yesterday. I ran my hand over the exhaust and it was dry, just white smoke. I'm certain it was water yesterday. Would you retorque the head bolts? We did have rain the day before I ran it, could this make a diference? My exhaust is 90ed over, only a blowing rain could have gotten in it.
Tks Ray

IMHO.. you ALWAYS retorque a head after it's been repalced ( head gasket ), once you warm it. I know some giys torque it 2x...

felpro makes a gasket that claims to not need it.. but why chance it?

Ray,

do you see sign of water/antifreeze in engine oil? any sign of oil in radiator? I re torque 6 head bolts and hope for the best. I think there is high likelihood that head repair might not have worked.. I'm hope I'm wrong there.

Try re torqueing first. White smoke indicates watergetting into the cylinder. If you are getting water in the cyl and the water in the radiator is dropingit can only mean one thing. The repair didn't work. Or the head gasket didn't seal.

Thanks for the help!! I'll retorque the head bolts and go from there. I did not see any water in the oil or vise versa. When I failed the first time I did not have that problem either it just run hot after about 15-20 minutes of use. If there's anything good about this is not running hot, just losing water. I'm sure this will change though if its still cracked. I'll let you know the outcome.

Would you recommend any of these head repair fixes in a bottle? Parts for this thing is getting hard to come by.

Anybody know a good head repair shop (near middle Georgia)?

Thanks Again, Ray

My 1700 had a cracked head also. I took it to one man and he started pinning the crack. Took too long and didn't finish. I got my head and I took it to Hill Automotive Machine Shop (478) 825-1560 708 Martin Luther King Jr Dr, Fort Valley, GA 31030. He was reasonable priced and it works.

Here are links to my engine rebuild.
