Thanks!!!
Jones I live just outside of Hawkinsville not to far from FV. I hope I don't need him, if I do I'll keep you posted. I pulled up your post, really neat. Is your tractor noisy? I was told that 1700s are.

Soundguy, sorry I donot understand your reply. are you saying I may not have a problem?

I hope I don't have to tear it down again. Just the head hasket for this thing is over 100 bucks.

Any info on those fixes in a bottle or are they a waste???
Thanks Again, Ray

IMHO.. you ALWAYS retorque a head after it's been repalced ( head gasket ), once you warm it. I know some giys torque it 2x...
/QUOTE]

i always torque them when i put them on the run them about 30 minutes and retorque and then go run it again for a couple of hours then retorque it for the final time

and your head i believe is suppose to be torqued in three steps increasing in ftlbs each step when you first put the head on i cant remember what the torque specs for your machine is tho then you should run like i stated above and retorque at max torque

yep, I agree.. when I just put my 4000 back together I did the same.. torque, warm, torque, warm..e tc. gave me time to check valves and oiling on top end too, before putting valve cover and side covers on.

I'm saying to retorque it first, before trying any sort of a head gasket sealer.

nh does make a head gasket sealer / builder cube product you can use.. but.. I'm not a fan of them really.... ideally it will seal metal to metal with gasket.. if it keeps bypassing though it will ruin the gasket, and then cause issues.. like water in oil ( wipe out bearings ).. or water accumulating in combustion cyl, causing possible hydro lock upon startup, or catastrophically during running..

On my engine rebuild, I did not re-torque the head bolts and did not have any problems.

My 1700 is not particularly noisy, just a typical diesel engine.

Have a 1700 Ford, just had head reworked (cracked). Used it first time since repair for about three hrs, temp stayed just right, ran ok no probelms. Started it up the next day and water was shooting out the exhaust. .

Would you recommend any of these head repair fixes in a bottle? Parts for this thing is getting hard to come by.
Trying to understand why you'd even consider an additive. If if fails the first time it's used after what had to be an expensive repair, doesn't the person that did the repair have some skin in the game?

The person that made the repair was an older man (78yrs) that had gotten out of the business, retired. He really did not want to do the work, I almost begged it get it done. He was very reasonable. I could not find anybody else to do the repair. I hate to take it back after that. I'll just chalk it up as lessons learned. Anybody else, I can assure you that would have been my first step.

Forgot to mention. I went back and re-torqued the head bolts. 4 of the bolts I got about 1/2 turn or maybe a little more out of them at 110ftlbs. I have not had the chance to try it out due to the rain. I sure hope that fixes it. I'll repost after I find out the results. Thanks again for all the advice.

1/2 a turn is a good sign. I hope the head is good and tight without any seepage.

half turn is huge... I hope the HG isn't ruined from bypassing from being loose...
