well i got the new solenoid yesterday and installed it this morning. still not turning. so i take the starter with the new solenoid attached to the dealer. he thinks its the starter. that even though it runs it is drawing too much current. anyway, feeling desperate because i need my tractor, i ordered a new starter which comes with another new solenoid. no choice there. this is about $200.

Randy,

sorry you could not get it to work well. Did yiu have to give your old one back (core charge?). if not, you might fiddle with it at your convenience and might end up having a working backup. Armature , brushes and other pieces can be checked one by one to find the cause of the problem.

they didn't take or ask for the core. i will keep it (as i have numerous other replaced parts over the years). might come in handy someday.

installing the new starter was the fix. now my plugs don't heat. but it kicked over anyway.
what do you guys use as a replacement ground cable?

Have not have to do it yet. I'd probably use a chunk of wire out of jumper cable adn crimp up the ends. you can make the crimps out of scrap sheet copper as well. Are you talking ground wire to the battery?

12 AWG will be fine.It is short distance. You can double it up and twist it if the wire feel warm.

I got to experience the bad ground first-hand as well. After painting the battery tray and putting it back together with the rusty bolts (no metric bolts in my bolt bins, imagine that!!). Went to start it and it barely turned over, then nothing. Thought I burned up the starter switch. Checked the voltage across the battery (12.4v). Then at the starter switch (7.6v). Hmmm... jumper cable from the negative terminal to a nice shiny (new) bolt on the frame, and had 12.4v at the switch. Picked up more shiny new metric bolts and another lug-to-lug battery cable to go from the tray bolt down to the frame. Should be good to go now.

Cool:) That rusty stuff is like clogged arteries causing low flow (low voltage) and getting good and clean contacts is the key.

For future information, the starters are now available on Ebay. I bought an aftermarket starter for my 1983, 1710 for $80.55 with free shipping and it arrived at my door in 2 days. I bought it from dbelectrical although there are several different sellers with the same price. I also found the solenoid on Ebay for $30 and free shipping but only after I had purchased and installed the new starter. The solenoid is much harder to find and most sell it fo $60 plus shipping.
