You and the jinman agree. But where do I physically put the diode. Between the two wires? Thanks

It should connect the W/R wires

You obviously know more details of the 1720 than I do, so I'll take a seat to the side and let you give what seems to be good and accurate advice. Thanks for chiming in and takin' up the slack.

Finally got the diode! I live in a tiny little town in AR. Everything here comes from 22 miles away, mail or ponyexpress.
In terms of current flow which side of the circuit gets blocked (alt or gauge)?
I want to thank youall for the help.
I do have another question. Can overheating cause temporary blowby? Does overheating change the viscosity of oil? I guess thats two questions.....
Thanks again

Hook up the diode, and reconnect all wiring. Key on-engine off, the alternator light should be on. If not, reverse the wires to the diode.

Overheating could cause temporary blowby, if the rings stick in the pistons. Usually, a cylinder scuffs, that's permanent. Overheating can cook the oil, changing it in many ways. Fix the overheat issues, change the oil and filter, and hope for the best

Last entry on this thread. I recently bought this tractor. What precipitated the alternator question was that I blew a fan belt and found out I did'nt have an alt warning light or a working temp gauge. Well the light and gauge work properly now but it turns out that it was too late for the engine. Anyone have a recommendation for finding a rebuilt engine? Thanks again youall.
