One of my friends owns a 1720 with problems. Upon receiving the tractor, putting it on jack stands I noted the left wheel would lock in with the transmission only when differential lock was pushed down. Left wheel would do nothing no matter what I did. My thought was broken stub axle shaft but no way to know without some disassembly so that was next. Not uncommon, I was wrong and after some disassembly I found the gear cluster in the differential had one small spider gear laying in the bottom and the other pretty much missing. Left side drive gear with broken teeth. Looks like Hoye has the gears and a couple of the gaskets. I'll attach pictures. Might come in handy for someone down the road.

Winston, that is amazing. After all these years, the inside looks so clean and new.

Are you able to figure out how to remount the gears?

@winston1 Nice photos, although the date threw me for a loop momentarily.:)

Good luck on the repair.

All the best,

Peter

Yes, the inside was very clean. It had transmission fluid in it. I don't expect a problem with the gears. Hoye nor anyone else I could find stock the two axle housing gaskets. My measuring of the gaskets showed about .022". That has to play into the final setting of clearance. Still mulling it over but I think I am going to buy some .031 sheet gasket and make some. That material was stuck so tight it was pretty much impossible to get an accurate measurement of the old gasket. This tool from Harbor Freight is worth the money. Air Scraper Kit 6 Pc.

I don't know how I come up with that date on the camera. I seldom mess with it. Pictures were actually taken 3-30-22.

Added a picture of my cut gaskets. Sent order to Hoye around 8am.

Project complete. I forgot about pictures but really nothing to show. Was not pleased with gear match ups but shimmed as best I knew how. Seemed to run out fine. I did notice on my parts order to Hoye that I was billed through All States Ag. Sort of wondering if Hoye has sold out?

Hi Winston. I'm glad you got your tractor running again and, yes, we were bought out by All States Ag Parts in May. Most of the same people stayed on and we are still at the same location so not much has really changed- except we have access to a lot more parts now.

Now that is GREAT to hear! They have several salvage yards. This makes the Yanmar support even stronger, likewise for the Mitsubishi-Satoh as some of the Yanmar parts fit too.

Thanks!
