Oh if I remember I think, one trouble I had was the flat braided wire from the battery it was also completely corroded off the terminal. I replaced mine with a stranded rubber coated one..

Yes, I too have the uncoated braided (-) negative ground cable. But it appears to be fine....

HMM I believe you'd remove the dash casing around the shifter levers under the steering wheel..Assuming its a geared tractor.It would I imagine be near one of those levers . tractor shifter.JPG

If it's not dirty connections, then then next thing to check is the cable. Cables can look like new on the outside, but have a severely corroded core hidden by the shiny red vinyl jacket.

Mine did the same thing. Neutral safety switch on the forward reverse column shifter.
