What's your arm length? That is as deep as you can go with a narrow bucket, anything deeper will require a wider bucket. When you have to stand in the trench, it's not just your shoe size, also figure all parts of your body. For me the narrowest I want is 16", but no 16" available so I went with an 18". I use it for everything - trenching for sprinklers to big holes for underground tanks. You use what you have. It makes a pretty big trench for the sprinklers and the spoils for the underground tanks are hard to manage and require repositioning, so not as fast as an excavator, but faster than by hand.
