1802D wont turn over

II cant get my 1802D to turn over/start. I replaced battery and it still does nothing other than dim dash red lights.
tractor was running just fine, I stopped, shut it down , for about 5 min. got nothing when I tried to restart it.

I install a different battery and still nothing.
how does safty switch under clutch pedal work, does it make or break circuit.

is there a fuse of relay that can be checked or that goes bad, can it be bypassed to ghet tractor started and into garage to work on.

what are my best bets for quick repair. i paln on replacing both battery cables this week. positive side first.

The safety switch on the clutch breaks the circuit but I doubt that is your problem if your dash lights are dimming. You probably have two plugs on the wires right above your clutch switch. You can disconnect those and plug them together and bypass the clutch switch. Sounds like a starter problem. I would take a screwdriver and go between two big terminals on the starter. Make sure tractor is in neutral, be safe doing this. You should see a little fire fly when you do this. If not, you might have a loose or bad wire.

On my F18D, if i try to start without the clutch pedal depressed, the dash lights do dim as if the battery is dead.

I tried jumping between the 2 large post on starter, I don't even get a spark,
handling positive wire from battery to starter it almost seems like wire is cut or eroded away, but plastic on outside is OK.
I will make some jumper for safety switch bypass just to check it

how much do starters cost .

can any auto parts store do a standard starter test with yanmar starter or does it take special equipment

Here is one price on a starter and all starters may not be created equal. If you are getting no spark at the starter you need to check voltage with volt meter positive lead on the positive lead coming from battery at the starter and negative lead of volt meter on the starter body someplace. Should get 12+ volts there. If not, you have a bad wire or connection. Could be positive or negative. makes perfect sense, I am off work for at least a week with disability so I will spend what time I can working on tractor.

I don't know much about a tractor but I am able to rebuild my Bridgeport mill with out any major problems, go figure

It is most probably dirty battery cables. You must remove them and clean them on BOTH ends.

I have clean post and connectors, I have not made it to town yet to get replacement cables, I am betting on positive cable being bad.

Did you remove the ground cable from the FRAME and sand/grind it clean? That was my problem.

no I did not grind on frame yet , I will do that when I re-install battery cables. I got fingers crossed, don't really want to dump 300.+ on new starter

Before buying cables are you sure yours are the problem? Did you take jumper cables and ground the bat to the frame and then take the positive side and touch it to the power connector on the starter to see if that makes it turn over? If the cables are not your problem you just threw money and time at something that may not be the problem.

yes positive cable was bad. I replaced it and now tractor is running but....
now I have light showing battery lit up, battery was full charged when I reinstalled it, at least my charger showed full charge.

which wires do I check to make sure it is charging battery. is starter also a generator? I don't see what is charging battery as in no alternator. where is it located ? I have had this light on before and it goes out after running and I guess charging up battery, battery is on 10+ years old, it could be going south on me but it started tractor 4-5 times just fine.
I don't have multi-meter to check charging volt back to battery, need some ideas on this problem

You need an inexpensive one of these. Volt Meter - Harbor Freight Tools If you don't have a Harbor Freight nearby you can get one for about $10 at Walmart. Everyone has a Walmart nearby. I don't know how you are going to check it without one. If you had one you could first check voltage at battery not running and then running. This would be at 1800 or more rpm. You should get close to 13 volts dc at the battery with it running. If not I can give you more procedure. No need to until you check that. Here is a picture of your dynamo. OH so that's what that thing is. I will see about wally-world multi-meter, maybe black Friday , ( I just got back with new 55" led flat screen smart TV)
I think all my problems are connections, but i wont know till I run test I guess

If you aren't getting voltage at the battery, you can check at the alternator plug for AC voltage. Should be 15VAC or so at low RPMs, and double that at higher RPMs. Your voltage regulator may be the culprit. Don't assume the alternator is bad, they are usually not the problem.

local wallyworld was just a little wild, so I did not have chance to get multi-meter, still not sure which item under hood is the item I seek

There is a little alternator or dynamo or whatever you want to call it. Like others said check running at around 1800-2000rpm. It will be say 12.8-13.2volts. Make sure your meter is set on 12v.

No the starter is not the alternator or charges the battery. There is also a voltage regulator like the folks mention that is under the dash that regulates the charge to the battery, this is mostlikely a problem when there is one. Just make sure you trouble shoot to see if it is bad.

But seriously you need to take that battery to be tested at say Advance Auto parts. A battery can show 12.6 volts on a multi meter but still be bad. There will be bad cells in the battery that will not allow it to have the cranking amps it needs. And even though you started it fine 4x it may act up on the 5th but not the 6th time or 7th but then again. Bad batteries can do funny things. If you do not have a load tester you need to take it in to be tested. Its free, most places as they want to sell you another battery. You can kind of test it with a multi meter by haveing someone read the volts on the battery as you start it. It should not drop i beleive below 7-9 volts i think, but not sure?
