Looking to buy 185 lo-boy cub cadet. It is in pretty fair to good condition, mower deck needs a little welding. I can handle the welding, just wondering what a ball park price would be. Anything to look out for, any problem areas?
new to cub cadets any info would really be welcome.
Thanks,
Brian

Brian,

I owned a 154 for a few years. I am not sure of the differences between the 154/185 and it has been 8 years since I worked on the 154 so take this for what it's worth.....

All parts were available but expensive.

Drive clutch - Limited clearances so once they start wearing it was difficult to shift. Check all the parts (including shaft) for wear. Pain to work on.

PTO clutch - Simple setup. Check for wear.

Engine - Mine ate points even though I replaced all the ignition parts. There are aftermarket electronic ignition kits for them now. The 154 was under powered but worked ok for regular lawn mowing (60" Woods deck) as long as you did not get behind.

Fuel - Uses a sediment bowl. If you get any contamination it is a problem. In-line fuel filter would be a good investment.

Transmission - 154 featured 'granny' gear, low gear and road gear. Believe the 185 had 6 forward gears. Don't recall the specifics but I had to remove the shift lever one time to replace something.

The 154 was heavy and built like a tank. Turning radius was poor. When everything was working the little 4 cylinder was really smooth. I sold mine for $1500. It was rough cosmetically and needed some work.

A good price range of the 154-185 Lo-Boy is $ 1000 to $3500 depending its condition.

If the engine needs OH, it will be expensive as the block is parent bore (sleevless). The pto clutch/shaft can get very spendy to fix too if they are worn beyond spec..
