Yes a rafter hanger will be easier than trying to toenail them together. If you can’t find 2x6x18, you can take a foot long 2x6 and scab to one side or both sides to connect both 2x6 together. Before they came out with the metal brackets on trusses, that’s how old ones were tied together. If you don’t like the way the scab patch looks, you can nail a foot or 2 of the 2x6 together. A lot of barns have been built that way around here.

Doubling the 2x10 will keep it from trying to sag when it gets alittle age to it and gives you more to secure the 2x6 to.

Thanks to all the replies and info! I'll post up the results as they come if anyone is interested. So far I have one side of the post anchors set in concrete. That's about it.
