1940s John Deere H

Is that a Gas or Diesel sound? I remember we had an old John Deere (looked like an R or D) but I can't remember much about it except for the sound.

The H was gas; the diesels (e.g., 70/720/830, etc.) sound pretty much the same, albeit a little deeper-sounding.

I really like the H for a show/parade tractor. It has the traditional horizontal engine layout of the Waterloo tractors but without the extra weight to haul around like an A or even a late styled B.

Dad used to have a 720 diesel with a straight pipe on it, and I loved to listen to it run. That tractor was a beast--it pulled the 9 shank chisel plow that came with it just as well in 5th as in 1st or 2nd.

My Dad had one that he used as a garden tractor back in the '50s. It pulled a one bottom plow that was made special for the tractor. It had a long steel beam that ran under the tractor and attached at a couple of points. It was raised and lowered by a long Johnson bar bolted to the rear axle. Took him some fiddling to get it working right but it would plow OK.

He dug up an old sickle bar mower for it to mow a 5 or 6 acre field next to the house. Big fight getting the mower to work every spring, but after the initial battle, it did OK too. The thing was a mass of rust.

Later on he relegated the H to "sprayrig" duties to keep the bugs out of his nut and fruit trees. Ran the pump off the PTO. Got rid of it sometime in the late '60s or early '70s. Needed tires and he couldn't find any at a good price. Besides, he'd upgraded to a JD40.

Dad's H looked very rough but always ran good, even after sitting all winter. The first job I had was working for a neighboring gentleman farmer. He had an H that looked like new, not a scratch on it. Even the brakes worked. But it had ignition problems and would often revert to running on one cylinder.

While working for him, I used the H to bring grain from the field back to the barn in a graincart. In apple season, I'd prowl his apple orchard with the H and a wagon picking up crates of apples the pickers left by the trees.

The H would do a lot of work with its 12HP. Loved the hand clutch and having a brake pedal for each foot.

We use our H to ted hay and rake as well as power the bolter mill at the fair. Nice little tractor, would make a great cultivator as well.

The H does have both fuel tanks and is made to run on gas or kero.

Nice little tractor, if the price is right, grab it.
