1944 farmall bn
Hey everyone. Grew up on a farm in SD. Had John Deeres and MM tractors. Neighbors had Farmalls. Always liked the way they sounded.
I bought a 1944 BN for a great deal last year. Runs like a top. Smooth and in great condition. Someone had rigged a small front end loader on it made from parts from a small crawler-type tractor for home use.
It sat over summer and now won't start. Has pleanty of gas and is not wet inside distributor cap.
What's my solution?
BTW- where can I get a kit for the gas tank port as it is leaking gas along with the bowl underneath?
I appreciate any responses.
Have a great day.:)

If you are referring to the Farmall BN model, you may find answers in the Vintage Tractor forum here on TBN. BTW, welcome aboard.:tractor:

The next step I would look at would be to see if you have a strong blue spark at the spark plug. To do this take out one of the plugs and ground it against the block and have someone else crank it over. Also how old is the gas and did it have gas in it while it was stored? It wouldn't be a bad idea to drop the fuel bowl on the carb to see if it has gum or varnish build up. If it does then definitely get a carb kit and clean out all the passages. I usually get most of my carb kits from Napa for all of our old stuff. Good luck with it, these old tractors are sure fun aren't they! Lol

Does it have a Magneto, or distributor..?? I'm assuming Mag., but a PO could have added a distributor...

If a mag., do as bbrown suggested, and check for spark. If none, and it has been setting outside, unhook the wire, at the mag that shorts the mag out, coming from the switch, then check for spark again.

Those switches if they have been setting out, will take on water, and short out the mag in the run position. Once it dries out, it will work fine again.

If still no spark, it may be the condensor. If not the condensor, it may be the internal coil.

What do the lugs look like inside the cap? Even to old ones with brass lugs get like an ionazation on them. It will have a greenish cast to it, build-up. You can scrape this off with the blade of a pocket knife... Check the rotor button too.

I cut a piece of heavy plastic material to keep the mag covered on mine, if it needs to set out for a while. If the switch is shorting out, once it gets dried out, cut a small plastic bottle to cover it.

Check the easy stuff first. Wire on the mag, and the cap for buildup.
