1948 Farmall "M" Factory Power Steering

Interesting, I never knew they made two different designs. Was this one a later design? I see the fenders and the "new" seat in the photo, which would make it a later one than ours.

I have had Farmall H's , and seen a lot of M's. I have never seen factory power steering. I don't remember reading about it in the IH books I've read, either.

The best power steering setup I've seen was on a M, it had a chevy power steering pump mounted under the hood, and a hydraulic cylinder to move the wheels back and forth.

Today I spoke to my 90 year old uncle who has always been my tractor guru, he has farmed with and owned international farmall tractors for the better part of 70 years, most likely more. He presently has 5 M's, 1 C, 1 H and several Cubs an F12 a few Allice Chalmers, 4 John Deere's and a few others. Anyway he said that he believed that the power steering was offered as an aftermarket add on, not factory installed but as a dealer install.

That is accurate. Char Lynn and Behlen were two companies offering P/S kits for many tractor brands and models.
