RobertN & Scruffy,
Thanks for the tips and info. Found out the gas tank is over
half full. Stale, bad gas. It does have a drain plug, so I plan
to try to drain it Sat. Brake master cyl. full of something
besides brake fluid. No idea what it is. Smells and looks like
water and GASOLINE? Due to early carb problems, I now
have alot of gas in oil pan. Plan to drain it Sat. also.
Rebuilding front brakes now. Found the lock out hubs have
been gutted. And, brake adjusters missing. I expected this
sort of thing, so not dissapointed. No, it was not listed for sale
anywhere. A friend of a friend told me about it when I said I
was looking for a jeep. I called the guy, and he said he had
planned to restore it and never got around to it. Parked it in a
field behind his house and been there ever since. Said it ran
good when parked. Of course it would not start when I got
there. He was asking $1,500.00. But came down to $1,000.00
when it would not start. She is green, silver, red, and RUST
colored. Does have 3-4 yr. old custom wheels and new tires.
Figure they are worth almost what I paid for her. I have not
had a hobby since I started my company. Nor a vacation.
(seven yrs.) Looking forward to fixing her up, and having
a little time off. Been working 7 days a week. Got my eye on
a willys pickup also. And a postal jeep. A friend bought a
postal jeep a few yrs. ago and put new bucket seats in front,
big knobby rear tires, and a winch, and has a neat little jeep
for play. 2 wheel drive, but goes almost anywhere with the
big rear tires. Rick

Rick, your latest project sounds fun. We need some pictures!

Regarding your master cylinder, there are a couple of things to be aware of. Brake fluid will absorb water and can rust things from the inside out over a long period of time. Also, the rubber used in the seals does not like petroleum based fluids at all. If it does have gasoline in it the seals could be swollen to several times their size. Take a good look for your own safety!

Keep us posted /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hi Rick,

I've got a 41 Ford that I just pulled the brakes apart on to fix a leaky wheel cylinder. The more I dug into the system, the more I found that needed to be replaced. The brake fluid was like chocolate milk, the cylinders were rusty and pitted, and the shoes and drums were shot. I decided very quickly to replace everything. The fluid might have been original to the car by the way it looked. It had attracted enough moisture into the system to rust up all the metal parts. The only sensible thing for me to do is to rip it all out and replace it with new parts. Fortunately all of it is still available, but at premium prices though.

Remember that your passengers and everyone else in your path will expect your brakes to work when needed. Not a place to try to save a couple of bucks.

Have fun and enjoy your new toy, they don't build them like that any more. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hi Guys,
Just finished one brake on front. Took apart other one, and
rebuilt cylinder, and had to use a large puller to get drum
off. Now, can't get it back on. Seems shoes are wrong ones,
or they have swollen from fluid. Going to get new shoes today.
Second lockout has been gutted also. Hope to get all brakes
done this weekend. Then start on gas tank etc. Already put
an electric fuel pump on her. Well, gotta get back to it.
Thanks for all comments. I think I'm going to need all the
encouragement I can get. BTW, she has the F-4-134 4 cyl.
engine. Rick
