Just to follow up. The test that I did on each of the VR's on the tractor and on the bench were not consistent. That's why it was so confusing and hard to track the problem. I understand that when the generator shop bench tested, he may have run the generator faster than the tractor and showed the VR's working. I ran the tractor around yesterday up and down steep banks and it charged great for 1 1/2 hr. with the lights on. Thanks for the input.

yup. generators charge poorly at idle..

That is another interesting part of this that this Echlin VR will charge at idle.(well about 800 RPM's)

it may charge.. but it won't charge well... the genny itself simply won't make much usefull wattage at low rpm.. possibly not even enough to offset field current draw, even if full field.

If the echlin vr shows charge at lower rpms, they have it's threshold / set points adjusted a bit more liberal than the other units.

I agree it may be set a little closer to low generator speed for charging. I haven't checked the battery SG but there is no reason for that right now. The voltage shows about 6.2 but it still may not be fully charged as yet. This is a customers tractor and I'm trying not to put a lot of hours on the newly built engine other than a break in period to make sure it was done correctly. I could charge the battery and go from there. Thanks for the input. Darrel

i wouldn't charge the battery.. that just bandaid covers any issues with the charge system. seeing what the charge system will do is the ticket. If it's not a new battery, and it's been running for an hour or more above idle.. 6.2 may be all it can muster.

A well charged, healthy 6v battery should set at 6.3v
