In addition to the good info Sounder gave you, one other option would be to put the transmission in 4th gear to prevent the motor from turning.

Yes - all good ideas although the impact wrench seemed to be the simplest solution based on what I'm working with. 4th gear was my first choice, but that did not work because I'm getting enough clutch slippage that the engine continued to turn even when in gear. It's a good tractor, but was ignored for many years and I've got a lot of catch-up work to do this winter. Thanks to all for the great advice! Bob

impact wrench is a good one. it's what i would have grabbed first too. the other ways are just tricks or emergency steps when better steps aren't handy.. or when trying to test something.. etc..

just a little tip use 1 or reverse have a helper apply the brakes put socket wrench on nut hit tool with hammer in the direction needed . but if you have impact us it nothing better.
