1966 cub cadet 123 motor rebuild

Another question, does anyone know what model #s have the narrow frame? Since I want to plow with whatever I get, and I already have the plow for the 123 I would need another narrow frame.

Thanks
Will

Narrow frame include the 1x2/1x3, 1x4/1x5, 1x6/1x7 series. Wideframes start with the 1x8/1x9 series. They made a 147 with the 14 Hp Kohler (K321), but I understand that they had a custom flywheel, or they cut the frame or something to make it work. Don't count on using a Kohler over 12 Hp without extensive work.

The front PTO is held on by set screws that radiate out from the center. There are two set screws in each hole! You need to line up the access holes with the setscrews in order to get at them. Push the center button and move the pulley until you see the holes. Once that is off you still have to get the bearing off. I think that involves another setscrew (or two?), and there is a ring that has to be turned as it is some sort of eccentric lock. . . . You may want to search and find some pictures or another description. This does get a bit involved! There are some really good sites w/ folks that have done this 100s of times. I haven't kept up, so don't really know where to point you--good luck!

Good luck with the tecumseh engine. I think i would have stayed with the Kohler or found a good Honda replacement if anything....let us know how it all works out.....

Shoot, I didn't know Tecumseh went out of buisness! Probably why this engine was so cheap. Oh well. Got it running today and it seems fine. Had some minor issues with the wiring and the throttle set up but got it worked out. Unfortunately I had to make a cosmetic change to the hood. Had to cut a notch out of the right side for the fuel cap. So now it has a "unique" look to it. By the way does anyone know what hydro oil to use in this tractor. I have the filter and the casket new in the box but no oil. Thanks

Check E-Bay, store owners name is Megg104, ALL she sells is used Cub Cadet parts, and has a very good customer satisfaction level.

Purchase another mower and sell the parts from the one you have now. If memory serves the Cub 123 had a Kohler K301 engine. You will think you have purchased shares in a gold mine when buying a replacement Kohler K301 cast iron engine.

Checked out prices and it seems that I would have to repower with something else as the K301 is no longer made. Found a guy on ebay that had one remanufactured for pulling. He wanted @ $650. Then someone in email suggested a vangurd 18 hp but didn't say the make.

A Vanguard engine is B&S. I have a 16 HP in my Max amphib. It is a reliable engine used in generators, welders..etc
