New owner 1966 jd 4020. 24v to 12v conversion previously. New alternator, batteries check good. Start with full charge and batteries quickly discharge while tractor runs. Any ideas?

Remove battery ground cable from frame and insert a test light in it's place. Light should burn if there's a drain then start disconnecting things until light goes out. When light goes out you've found the drain .

DO batteries stay charged while not running? Do you still have 2, 12 volt batteries? How are the battery cables connected? DOes the charge indicator light on the dash work? If you can post a picture of batteries and cable connections, we can check to be sure all is connected properly. Also picture of alternator wiring would be helpful.

Not sure about discharge while not running, having to put on charger after running. Batteries in parallel pos to pos to pos post on starter. One wire alternator connected to pos post on starter. With all cables connected at starter, no short to ground at pos post on starter. Reading 14 volts at starter connection.

When you state "batteries are good" did you have batteries "load tested" to be sure they don't have a dead cell?

Yes batteries load tested. Starts immediately with full charge. Is it possible that alternator discharging instead of charging batteries. Hard to believe large enough drain that alternator can't keep up.

Checking alternator charging output is a simple task using a VOM.

Sorry to be a little late to the game. I have a Case 850D Dozer and it was doing the same thing. One of the batteries was bad. Ran all day long, went to crank it the next morning-nothing. Got it fired off, metered all charge system components and they checked fine. Disconnected all cables at batteries. One battery metered 12.6V and was down to around 9V a few hours later.
