Well I got the backhoe on Saturday I paid 7000 for it. What do you guys think about that price?? It starts right up, the motor sounds real, smooth, the hydrolics seem to work real good. The filter light is on, which means i need to change the hydrolic/transmission oil/filters. This thing takes 10gallons of oil!!! Does anyone have anytips on how to change the hydrolic oil, i don't want 10gallons of oil leaking out!

Congratulations on your purchase. It sounds like you got a pretty fair deal. The 510 is about the equivalent of a 3020 ag tractor and one of those in fair condition will bring about the same money with out a BH /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

In regards to the filter light: If I recall on that tractor the light is notorious for coming on when the oil is cold. Once the hyd fluids are warmed up it will probably go out. Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to change the fluids regardless since you don't know the last time it was changed.
Make sure to grease the pins in the bh and loader on a regular basis.
Last bit of advice: Not sure of your local laws regarding digging holes but here in Iowa it is illegal to dig any hole on private or public property without first contacting a locating service regarding underground utilities. You may want to check on this since the fines are extremely steep here in Iowa. And it's actually no big deal to make the call.

Joe1L, what is the letter designation behind the 510? Is it a 510B or 510C?

I believe it is a 510 but the bill of sale says 510D. It is a 1974, and i really can't find that much information on it.

I have a 1971 jd510 backhoe I used the locker once and now the rear end is making a lot of noise and chattering and slipping I think it has a slave cylinder I thought it would be mechanical how do I un stick it if its that's whats wrong.
