1978 550 steering issue

Hi all first post so here goes.

I have a 1978 550 tractor. The steering is hydrostatic and seems to be basically infinite there is no stop for the wheel even when the road wheels are on full lock. Also when out on the move straight ahead needs constant minor correcting to the right. This gives the fear if out in traffic. The fluid level was low so has been filled but the issue persists. I have looked high and low for a new steering box and there are none to be had, plenty of rams and pumps by not boxes.

Is this normal or how do I fix it if not?

First Welcome to the Forum and i hope you will enjoy being part of our big happy family.

The 550 has what is called an orbitrol valve on the steering column and as you say there is no mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the wheels ,It has been quite a few years since i played with one but there is an adjustment somewhere on the steering I remember having to adjust a brand new 550 before it went out to the customer I dont remember it being a big job ,Maybe if you get a willing helper to turn the steering wheel back and forth and have a look around the steering ,see if you can spot the adjuster and when you do just a LITTLE bit at a time.
