Have a 1997 l4200 and noticed that there is fluid leaking around the front tire. Im thinking its a bad seal. Is this something difficult to replace or should i put it in the shop. I am handy and not affraid to try new challanges but im really not sure whats leaking so i thought i would see what i can find here. Thanks in advance. Mike

Hi Mike - welcome to TBN.

There are lots of posts on this forum about L- series front axle leaks. Here's some information to read. Lots of people do the repair themselves. Take care, Dick B

You should wash it well, then inspect for where the oil is coming from.

It is common for these (and most other 4x4 tractors) to leak at the bezel seal where the front hub rotates relative to the axle. My tractor has dribbled from there since I got it 5 years and 600 hours ago. It has gotten worse over time, and I changed from UDT to 80W90 gear oil, then to 90W140 gear oil. Now I keep a cup under it while parked to prevent a puddle and keep track of how much is dribbling out. I probably lose 3-4 ounces a month, so if I dump in a quart or so a couple of times a year, I'm good. There is a gallon and a half of fluid in the front axle, so I'm not too worried about it getting low.

It could also be the seal in the square area above the hub - that is sealed with an o-ring inside the square casting.

I understand that a bezel seal replacement it is a fairly easy fix that can be done in an hour or two, but good snap ring pliers are required. My local shop charges an exorbitant amount for the repair - something like $500/side (includes new bearings). I've been planning on fixing mine for years, but just haven't found the time. In the meantime, I'll just keep putting that cup underneath the hub when it's parked.
