Well everybody, I recently purchased 6acres of land and am now in the market for my first tractor, I've done some research and have narrowed my search down to Kubota/Kioti. I'm interested in the MX5200. For now my main needs are a loader and box blade. I have around 200-300 yds of dirt to spread and grade around the property, about 1/2 an acre of small trees and brush to remove, and about 15, 6-8" wide trees to remove around my pond. My future plans are to mow the yard with a 60/72" finish mower. The property does not have a house on it yet but will in the next couple of years. Will the 5200 be adequate for these task. I've read really good things about the Kioti brand, but don't know exactly which model would be comparable to the 5200. And what are the pros and cons to each make. I have a Kubota dealer within 15 miles of my land. The nearest Kioti dealer is about 100 miles away. Thanks in advance for any information.

G'day Mate and welcome to TBN from Downunder.

The website TractorData.com is a great site/tool to compare tractor specifications. I'm sure that others will be along to advise you on how to spend your hard earned. :) (we do like to spend other peoples money)

For example: TractorData.com Kubota MX5200 tractor information

An MX5200 will be unequivocally adequate for your tasks and property, power-wise and weight-wise. Rigid stabilizers are important on a tractor that will pull and push a Box Blade. Rigid stabilizers on the MX5200 are heavy duty. MX5200 stabilizers also telescope, which make mounting Three Point Hitch implements relatively easy.

I strongly recommend optional L2296 Heavy Duty Round Back FEL bucket for dirt work.

Tractors are magnets for thieves: high value, liquid, no registration. Here today, gone in the morning. Will you have a secure place to keep the tractor on your property?

Consider a Rollover Box Blade for your tractor. You will likely want a Landscape Rake with gauge wheels or a Ratchet Rake bucket attachment, for smoothing.

Though I am on my third tractor, second Kubota, it is convenient having my Kubota dealer six miles from my property. You will have a lot of questions as a first time tractor owner/operator. Dealer does my service.

It is expensive to have dealer trailer a tractor for service. Dealer has to make four trips (two round-trips) with HD truck, HD trailer and driver to fetch and return tractor at $1.25 to $1.50 per mile. (100 X 4 X $1.25 = $500 at dealer cost.)

As you are considering Kioti, you should also look at LS, both from Korea and good competition to Kubota. Especially should you have a LS dealer within twenty miles of Scottsmoor. John Deere certainly top class too.

First of all

Often prospective buyers discuss price. Remember that a tractor is mainly a mobile engine platform to use additional attachments, Front End Loader (FEL), box blade, backhoe, tiller, etc.

For most of us $1 spent on the tractor represents $1 less spent on attachments.

That written, determine your requirements -
around 200-300 yds of dirt to spread and grade around the property
Any decent tractor with a FEL and a box blade will do.
15, 6-8" wide trees
are not much. Cut high and you probably can pull them over.

What is this
to mow the yard
you write about? I'm a firm believer that my "yard" or "lawn" should only be big enough to keep trees from hitting the house and bugs away. I've 4 houses, over 400 acres of land and only about an acre of lawn, all mowed w/ a push mower. If you want a big "yard" consider the tradeoff of a good ZTR versus a mower deck for a tractor.

As far as the pros and cons of Kioti vs Kubota -
Consider your wrenching capabilities versus the hauling cost. I have only had 1 "trip" to the dealership on my tractors, that was to have a newly purchased backhoe installed on my new (to me ) B7610. Tractors are "easy" to work on for the most part.

Kioti (based on readings on the forum) is about reliable as Kubota. They are generally built a little heavier.

Your target of a 50HP tractor should surely serve you well on 6 acres.

The mx5200 will be more than enough for what you are describing. For 6 acres, you can easily get by with something less, such as an l3901, l3560, etc. Kioti doesn't really have a competing model to those high 30's HP machines at this moment, but they compete well at the 40+ HP range. As mentioned, it's worth your time to look at other brands too, if you can. Massey and LS offer great options as well. Good luck!

Thanks for the replies. I'm curious on the HST transmissions on both brands over the gear shifts. What are the pros and cons to both. Are they equally reliable. I will be going to the nearest Kioti dealer tomorrow to check out their product.

I have 7.5 acres, and have mowed, trenched 2000+ ft of water line to 8ft deep, dug my basement, built my 600 ft drive, and many other tasks all with my trusty MX5100 HST. Truly a very capable machine, now approaching 500 hrs. Havent had to go back to the dealer yet, other than for filters, etc.
I opted for the BH92 b/h , LP 84" bb, &@" LP rotary mower, LA844 loader, and 72" Kuhn Tiller. B/H, B/B, and mower see most of the use. I also bought a B6200 with a 36" tiller dedicated to keeping the shelter belt and garden areas tilled and weeded.
Can't comment on other brands, but I have no regrets with my purchase!

Welcome to the forum and good luck on your acreage build. Lots of satisfying seat time!

The equivalent Kioti is either the new DK5010, if you want to match the base features of the MX. If you are want some more features the NX5010 is also in the same range.

On the lawn mowing, one doesn't mow the lawn with a 50HP tractor. Get a zero turn, not much more than a mowing deck or RFM.

That might be true if you get the cheapest, low end residential zero turn available. And they likely wouldn't last very long.
I paid less than $1900 for my 84" First choice rear finish mower. (years ago, don't know what they cost today)
My zero turn cost me just under $12,000

This may be the first time we've suggested going with a smaller machine. 6 acres isn't very much. A tractor in the mid 20's to mid 30's HP will be more than enough. And if you go much larger you are going to want a separate mower. I have 4 acres and my 24HP JD 2320 is almost overkill (but I would never admit that to my wife). Once in a while you may run into something that would be a lot easier with the big HP tractor, but most of the time you will be glad you have a smaller more flexible machine.
