I do not know about your situation but 2-4D will damage concords and most grape vines. It is illegal to use it within 2 miles of any vineyard in this county.

Well, I'm glad I don't live in your county or I would probably be behind bars for unwittingly having used 2,4-d!

Learn something new every day.

They won't arrest you unless you intentionally do something to destroy a neighbors vineyard. However, you would be forced to pay for all damages to the vineyard and that will include buying the crop which will range from $1k-$6k per acre.

The kicker is, the farm dealers who sell 2-4D tell people about the restrictions. Yet, TSC sells the stuff with no warnings at all. Ultimately, I would think TSC would be partly responsible for any damages in this area.

Eric,
From what I have read on my label if you are planning to reseed in the fall you should not spray 2,4-D in the fall, either just before or after. It would have been OK to spray back in the spring. You are running the risk of hurting the germination of your grass seed even though it is not a broad leaf plant. I would recommend Roundup. That's how I did my lawn last fall and got good results until this severe drought turned it all brown and crunchy. Probably spent $500 on seed alone. Don't know if it will come back.

I don't want to kill the grass that I already have growing. I just want to overseed and help fill in the areas that have a lot of weeds. I just want to kill back the weeds to give the new seed a chance.

2-4D is a fine weed killer but several other weed killers are also available if you are in grape country. In New York it is unlawful to use 2-4D more than twice during the growing season, but many lawn companies spray three times each season. I believe they use a product in mid summer that is alcohol based, if my memory serves me it may be called Triamine.

Most guys use a combination of roundup, Aim, and Simazine for weed control in the vineyards. Aim burns the suckers leaves off without hurting the grape vines and does so before the roundup has a chance to hurt the vines also. This saves a lot of time and labor as the suckers are taken care of chemically rather then by hand and at the same time any weeds are taken care of also.
