Thanks for the response Mark.

Actually we bought the house new... 6 years ago. The loggers took the trees out 3 years ago... we just hired a track loader to remove the stumps.

After all this time... the Mrs. wants to have grass planted this spring. I can't say that I blame her... she has been pretty patient.

Good advice on the dozer but I would rather put the $2500 towards the tractor.

Hello Jim,

Thanks for your feedback. I just looked at the 4500 today and it is not a hydro. However, it has the power reverser which seemed to work pretty well. Not as easy as the hydro but I think that it would do the job.

A couple of concerns /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif about this tractor include a cracked hood. The crack is mostly cosmetic but for resale purposes, I would rather not have a cracked hood. Any ideas on the cost of repairing or replacing it?

Another concern is that there seems to be quite a lot of soot buildup on the loader arm (next to the exhaust.) Is this fairly normal or can it be an indication of burning oil?

I have been giving a lot of thought to the drainage and landscaping and we seem to have a pretty good plan. I am looking for a software package that I can use to do the drawings online. If I find one, I will post some of the drawings to get feedback.

Good move on keeping the dirt. My house was already built when I found it and they had already hauled off a good bit of the topsoil and most of the fill dirt. I sure could use some of that now.

I had planned on getting a boxblade and a landscape rake. I will probably rent a tiller because I don't think the re-sale market is too good for that. I am not sure that I would need a subsoiler because the track loader has done a pretty good job of digging up the whole 2 acres. I guess I'll have to see how that goes.

I haven't thought about the pallet forks though... I can see where they might be helpful in moving the stumps and such in the burn pile. How else would you suggest I use the pallet forks?

Thanks again Jim and I will post some pictures as I get going.

Something that came to my attention when tractor shopping was the fact that some dealers rent their equipment then sell it with some time left on the factory warranty ... it wouldn't help with a cracked hood but would help if it were burning oil.
Also re: software, some of the house design programs may have a landscape module that may be a quick and easy way to approach that. Good luck with your bomb field.

OK guys...

The project has begun. I have purchased a JD4410 430FEL Box Scraper, Landscape Rake, and I will be looking at a rock picker in the next couple of days. I also bought a CST/Berger auto level, tripod, and rod to help with grading and such.

Because I am a bit of a map lover, I also plan to survey the lot and create my own personal topo map with 1 foot intervals (there isn't much slope to my land.)

Here is a landscape picture of the house and side yard looking SW. The picture covers about 200 feet from side to side. The track loader belongs to the fellow who cleared the stumps for me. He is waiting for the next job to move it I think.

The pile of stumps and debris is the smaller of two piles and this picture was taken after a week of 'round the clock burning.

Basically the lot is 2 acres with nothing on it but the house. My lot is surrounded by timber pines on 3 sides with the road in the front.

In my next post, I'll show the other side of the house.

Here is the other side of the house. This image also covers about 200 feet from side to side and is SW of the house. The furthest point from the house (you can see where the 2 treelines come together) is about 425 feet from the house.

The old tractor on the left side is a 1952 Farmall Cub which needs a little works to get it running.

There is a large pile of topsoil left of center and the pile of clay in the front center of the picture came from the basement excavation.

The burn pile left of center is about 50 feet long by 12 feet wide. The original height was about 7 feet and it is now about 5 feet. This picture was taken after 7 days of 'round the clock burning.

To the left of the burn pile is a low area that seems to hold a lot of water. The track loader left ruts about 3 to 4 feet deep in some areas... particularly in this area. We are thinking of putting in a small, lined pond and plant the surrounding area as a bog garden.

On the right is a small garden in a raised bed (1 of 4) and the white frame is a trellis made of pvc pipe and lattice. This trellis has served us well for about 6 years holding cucumbers and canteloupes at various times.

More pictures to follow.

Here is a picture of my new JD4410.

The 4 in 1 bucket has proven to be a tremendous asset.
