I've had very poor luck with mineral and salt blocks. I never thought about trying a granualar type. I wonder if rock salt would be good? What and how will you use the granular stuff?

I've seen hundreds of deer out in the alfalfa fields all over the Rockies, but since we don't grown alfalfa around here, I haven't tried it. I actually forgot about it until I saw your picture, so I was really curious on how well it worked.

My food plot it long since burned up. I'm gonna disk it in and get my fall food plot planted next month. I found that they like to walk through it and eat a little bit of different things, but so far, I haven't found anything that they really like.

The granular you just dig a small compression in the ground, say 2-3" deep x 3' diameter and pour in the granule. I use the cattle salt and mineral mix. Deer seem to prefer it mixed with a little dirt, don't now why, maybe more "natural".

Eddie, I have always just planted a 80/20 mix of good old oats and wheat, plus about 2-300# an acre of 15-15-15. I have grown Alfalfa in Erath county Tx and had good luck in bottom land (Ladack (sp) or Dryland seed). But hard to beat just plain oats around here, your only competing with other food plots or natural vegetation. I haven't had good luck with the several types of commercial plot seed. It's important to get seed that's local, since it is what grows best here.

Heres a decent link on a little Texas info.

2 nights ago we had 5 does, 3 bucks, and a fawn....only a few have been named....but we've been feeding those for 3 years. I put a bucket of corn on the ground just outside our dining room window.

 i thought we where "abnormal" naming a couple of ours, We have two 1 1/2 year old bucks we named Mutt and Jeff when they where fawns, they where always together and just being PITA for the other deer, they would pick on the older bucks I guess to get them to play.

This year, we only have 2 doe fawns we have seen, so when call them Thelma and Luise!

My game camera never was all that good, but its quality is going downhill it seems. Here are a few shots of my night-time guests.

Jim,

How do you load your feeder? I had a tripod like that and hated putting corn into it because it was up high like that, and I had to climb on top of something to get up there.

I fill mine out of my FEL.

Jim, your camera works about as good as mine, great daytime photos though, but night photos don't reach that far. Does better when I add fresh batteries. One of these days I'm going to get a better on like a Cutteback and probably Infra red too.

It's the perfect height to back up the Mule and climb into the bed. I set the lid on top of my Mule cab and just pour in the corn right out of the bag. I like this feeder because it is plastic and has a great lid that keeps out 100% of the rain. The feeder is about 10 years old and shows no deterioration whatsoever. However, it originally had three turbo feeders on it and they wore out their rubber corn flippers. I put this single on, but don't like it much so I just ordered another type that should be here tomorrow or Friday from Amazon.

I have tried allot of timers and the best one so far has been the "Sunslinger" with built in solar panel. Mine is 8 years old now and I have a friend that has 3 that are over 12 years old and still going. I have had to replace the sun panel on mine because of coons. Here's a link to anyone that may be interested and priced right too!

A couple of photos from this morning.

I just ordered one of these and it is supposed to be here today or tomorrow. Don't you have trouble with squirrels and 'coons messing with your slinger? I have to put a cage around mine or the squirrels will empty the feeder in a few days and there's a pile of corn on the ground. If you look closely at my photos above, you can see that my corn shooter has a sheet metal front. I cut a slot into the sheet metal and screwed it on the corn shooter. Squirrels chewed the plastic on each side of the corn opening of my old shooter and destroyed them.

EDIT: I looked closer and can now see your "squirrel cage".
