My four-stroke Stihl FS 130 has been great. I've had it about 3 years now... It is the 4-mix type where you still have to mix the oil and gas.

If you put oil in the fuel, its a 2 stroke. Weedeaters are the only thing I can think of that came out with 4 stroke engine but you can still buy 3 stroke ones as well. Those little 4 stroke weedeaters didn't seem to be much heavier than the 2 stroke ones to me, but they don't produce a lot of power, just a lot of RPM.
Boat engines are much better with 4 stroke engines, quieter, smoother running and no smoke or oil pollution in the water.

If you put oil in with the gas in a Stihl it could be a 4stroke as well.

The 4-mix are valved 4stroke engines running an oil/gas mix so they don't need crankcase oil. This saves weight and they are mostly on the Stihl trimmer line. Some of the newer Sthil chainsaws are strato saws and are still 2stroke. The strato technology allows the saw to take a "gulp" of fresh air between the strokes to better separate the exhaust air from the fueled air. Bad explanation, I know.

The Strato technology has cleaned up the emissions considerably and gives the same sized saw a little more power while using less fuel. This "breathed" (pun intended) more life into the 2 stroke engine market. Historical link attached

The information i have heard about 2 strokes involves their use on Laves and rivers. Alot of jurisdictions have dis-allowed their use on the water. Also places like Yellowstone have disallowed the use of 2 stroke snow mobiles in the park.

As far as lawn equipment goes, everyone is still selling the 2 strokes. I just bought a new Stihl Kombi tree trimmer with the 4 stroke version. As mentioned before it Stihl uses premix, so i really dont know what the benefits of this motor are. It was the only version that the dealer had in stock at that time. He sold the 2 stroke version, but i needed it that day.

I bought a 4 stroke weed whacker from Trot Bilt a couple of years ago and it's been great. Easy to start, light and gets the job done.

The best lawnmower I ever owned or used was a 2-stroke Lawn Boy. I bought a used one, used it for 17 years and it was still in great shape when we went to full time RVing and I gave it to a son-in-law. And at the same time, a guy who worked for me said his Lawn Boy was 25 years old.

But now I guess they're just a green Toro.

I think I read some where that 2 strokes have to meet some of the new emissions laws. Some are called Strato Charged engine Technology Technology | RedMax

I have a 4 stroke weed eater and have stopped using it. If you don't hold it just right it smokes. It's a b*tch to start, uses a lot of gas, leaks oil all over the garage, wife won't go near it, is noisy, heavy and all around pos.

sounds like may be user issues?

leaks oil?

fill cap tight?

What brand? My Stihl pro 130 starts and runs like a top. Lots of torque.

I have the 25cc Honda 4 stroke weedeater, I also put a brush blade on it. I have had it for 10 years, it was a pain to start at first, but after it got broken in, it starts easy. I run out of energy before it will run out of a tank of fuel ~4 hrs. Some times I wish for a little more power but all I do is change the string, change the oil yearly and add fuel.
