I am looking forward to your power barrow post. Your creativity is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Well, I'm in!

A few weeks ago I found an ad for a used 720 on Craigslist and took the plunge. It came with the tiller, sickle bar mower, brush mower, dozer blade, extra wheels and tires (larger) and a few misc. spares. I've used the sickle bar extensively over the last couple of weekends. Sure beats the weedeater!

I'm considering adding a second set of wheels as one area of my property is quite hilly. I'm assuming this would be helpful with traction and stability.

Cheers,

Erik

Hey Erik,

Unless you're using the 4 by 8 tires, I think you'll find dualling it up prohibitively expensive. You'll also find the the 720 will be a bear to turn with all that extra rubber since it has a solid axle. Dualling up a machine is usually done for more traction in heavy pulling or more floatation through soft areas. I'd recommend buying wheel extensions instead.

Thanks for the response.

The tractor already has the ratcheting mechanisms installed (poor man's differential?). Can I install the wheel extensions to move the wheels out even further?

Not sure how the ratcheting mechanism is mounted, but generally you can add extensions.

One of the things I find so appealing with these walkbehinds is that you (if you have the equip/skills) can build/fabricate/adapt just about anything imaginable as long as you have the hp and traction to use it. Costs,,,, hey we're talking walkbehind tractors here,, priorities man, were talkin NEED, lol. Actually since most of these machines are so well built and will last decades I think about cost over a much longer timeframe than say a box store machine, and when you look at it over the lifespan of the machine most stuff is dirt cheap per year, although the initial sticker can be shocking for some items.

Hi Erik,

With the free-wheel devices, the trouble with turning dualled up tires is less. Yes, you could buy 5 or 8 inch extensions to put between the free-wheel devices and the machine.

I recently put dual wheels on my 722 to make it less prone to dig into soft earth and get bogged down. It made a huge difference. It's a little more difficult to turn around at the end of a row; but not enough to make me consider removing them. I had to purchase two sets of the axle extensions to be able to mount the dual wheels. Given the improvement in performance it was a worthwhile expenditure.
